A professional singer since she was fifteen, Brooks' début, a cover of Etta James's "Something's Got A Hold On Me", was released on Decca in 1964. Later she became the vocalist with a British 12-piece Stax-influenced, jazz-rock fusion band called Dada that released one, eponymous, album in 1970.
Brooks, along with guitarist Pete Gage, singer Robert Palmer and bassist Steve York formed Vinegar Joe in 1971, adding keyboard player Dave Thompson. The band was without a drummer; Conrad Isidore and Rob Tait drummed on the first album, released in 1972.
In 1974, after three albums Vinegar Joe split and Brooks went solo. After a time in the US as backing singer with the American southern boogie band Wet Willie, she returned to England. Her first solo album on A&M records was Rich Man's Woman (1975).
Since I Fell For You

And never get love
You'd better let love depart
I know it's so, and yet I know
I can't get you out of my heart
You made me leave my happy home
You took my love and now you're gone
Love brings such misery and pain
I guess I'll never be the same
Since I fell for you
Well, it's too bad
And it's too sad
But I'm in love with you
You love me, then you snub me
But what can I do?
I'm so in love with you
I guess I'll never see the light
I get the blues most every night
Since I fell for you
Since I fell for you
The lyrics of Elkie Brooks's song "Since I Fell For You" speak of the pain of unrequited love. The first stanza talks about how it can be better to let go of love when it's one-sided, but the heart is stubborn and holds on to the feelings. The imagery of leaving a happy home and a feeling of being abandoned is powerful in expressing the depth of the singer's emotions. The second stanza speaks of the pain that comes with love, how it brings misery and changes people. The singer expresses how they are trapped in their love and cannot break free from the hold that this unrequited love has on them.
In the bridge, the singer acknowledges that the situation is unfortunate, but even though they are snubbed and rejected by their lover, they cannot help but be in love. The final stanza speaks to a feeling of hopelessness and despair, that the singer will never be able to move past this unfulfilled love and will always be plagued by the blues.
Overall, the lyrics of "Since I Fell For You" are a lament for the pain of unrequited love, a feeling that is universal and timeless.
