Ella was born and grew up in London. She was song writing from an early age on the piano and recorded her first track when she was 12. Her father, being very musical, had a great influence on her growing up and gave Ella her first guitar when she was 14. Ella and her family moved from London to Devon, and she got her first gig in Exeter when she was 16, supporting a friend's band called Thousand Natural Shocks.
Ella finished her first tour in September 2007 supporting Jaqui McShees’ Pentangle, which took her all over the country. Other artists she has supported include Midge Ure, The Ric Sanders Group, The Dylan Project and many others. In the past Ella has performed with a full band behind her, and has also performed with bass player and backing vocalist Buddy Valentine for many gigs. At the moment Ella’s live set up is very simple and intimate with just her and her guitar.
Her song ‘Breathe’ is featured on a recent compilation CD called Folk Rising, which is a collection of young upcoming artists put together by Proper Music Distribution. This version of ‘Breathe’ is different from the version on ‘Blame Amy’. Produced by John McCusker and featuring Kate Rusby, it was recorded for the BBC and was featured in an episode of a program called ‘Jam and Jerusalem’ on BBC1.

Capable
Ella Edmondson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Was I playing too hard baby
Couldn't you keep up with me
Oh now I feel this power within me
Now you feel the heat
Now you feel the heat
Now you feel the heat
Only I, only I loved you
You and me were like one
Only I can destroy me
Only I am capable
Did I say too much honey
Did I hit too hard baby
Did you think I'd give up so quickly
Not now I feel this power within me
Now you feel the heat
Now you feel the heat
Now you feel the heat
Now you feel the heat
Only I, only I loved you
You and me were like one
Only I can destroy me
Only I am capable
Only I, only I loved you
You and me were like one
Only I can destroy me
Only I am capable
The opening verse of Ella Edmondson's song titled "Capable" speaks volumes about the subtext of her song. It could be interpreted as a reflection of a relationship where one person feels that they are running ahead while the other party is lagging. There is a sense of frustration that is being expressed and questioning whether the other partner was unable to keep up. The frustration is brought to the fore by the lines "Was I running too fast honey, Was I playing too hard baby". There is an underlying message of the singer being too much for her partner to handle.
However, the singer takes a decidedly different tone soon after, and the lyrics take an empowering turn. There is now a sense of victory emanating from the singer. It is as if the frustration has empowered her and given her strength. She stands tall, confident in her own abilities and proclaims, "Only I can destroy me, Only I am capable." The use of the word 'capable' here signifies more than just ability; it is an assertion of power and strength. The message is that the singer does not require anyone else to validate her worth, she is capable of doing that on her own. It is a powerful message of self-love, independence and self-efficacy.
The chorus reinforces this message, with the repetition of "Now you feel the heat" implying that the other person is now experiencing the consequences of underestimating the singer. "Only I, only I loved you, You and me were like one" further reinforces the idea that the singer does not require anyone else to validate her love. She is her own person, with her own worth.
Overall, Ella Edmondson's "Capable" is a powerful anthem of self-empowerment and self-love. It encourages women (and men) to stand tall and assert their worth in the face of societal pressure and expectations.
