'Round Midnight
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It begins to tell 'round midnight, midnight
I do pretty well till after sundown
Suppertime I'm feelin' sad
But it really gets bad 'round midnight

Memories always start 'round midnight
Haven't got the heart to stand those memories
When my heart is still with you
And old midnight knows it too

When a quarrel we had needs mending
Does it mean that our love is ending?
Darlin', I need you; lately I find
You're out of my heart and I'm out of my mind

Let our hearts take wings 'round midnight, midnight
Let the angels sing for your returning
Till our love is safe and sound
And old midnight comes around

Feelin' sad, really gets bad
'Round, 'round, 'round midnight

Overall Meaning

"Round Midnight" is a jazz standard that was first recorded by the legendary jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk in 1944, but the version that is most famous and revered is the one recorded by Ella Fitzgerald in 1957. The song is an emotive and melancholic ballad that speaks about the pain and turmoil that a person can feel when love ends or is at risk of ending. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of the feelings of sadness, loneliness, confusion, and despair that can grip a person late at night, especially when they are haunted by a lost love.

The first verse talks about how the pain and sadness start around midnight, after sundown when the world darkens and a person is left alone with their thoughts. The second verse describes the memories that come flooding back at night, making it hard to move on from a lost love. The third verse speaks to the hope and desperation that a person can feel when they realize that their love may be slipping away, and they plead for their partner's return. The chorus captures the emotional roller coaster of the song, with the ups and downs of love and heartbreak that can hit a person at any time, but especially at night.

Overall, "Round Midnight" is a powerful expression of the human heart and its experiences of love and loss. It speaks to the universal experience of heartbreak and the ways in which music can help us connect with our deepest feelings and emotions.

One of my favorite compositions. I've searched and have not been able to hear another singer who sings it as well as well as Ella Fitzgerald. Why do so many modern singers have such a breathy way of singing? Vocal clarity gives much more feeling and emotion than a breathy way of singing.
