A-Tisket A-Tasket
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A-tisket, a-tasket
A green and yellow basket
I send a letter to my mommy
On the way I dropped it

I dropped it, I dropped it
Yes, on the way I dropped it
A little girlie picked it up
And took put it in her pocket

She was truckin' on down the avenue
Without a single thing to do
She went peck, peck, peckin' all around
When she spied it on the ground

She took it, she took it
She took my yellow basket
And if she doesn't bring it back
I think that I would die

A-tisket, a-tasket
A green and yellow basket
And if that girlie don't return it
Don't know what I'll do

Oh dear, I wonder where my basket can be
Oh gee, I wish that little girl I could see
Oh, why was I so careless with that basket of mine
That itty-bitty basket was a joy of mine

A-tisket, a-tasket
I lost my yellow basket
Won't someone help me find my basket
And make me happy again

(Was it green?) no no no no
(Was it red?) no no no no
(Was it blue?) no no no no
Just a little yellow basket

A little yellow basket

Overall Meaning

In Ella Fitzgerald's hit song 'A-Tisket A-Tasket', the singer sends a letter to her mother in a green and yellow basket, but soon loses it on the way leading to a series of events. Ella laments about losing her precious basket and wonders where it could be as the song progresses. She then muses on how careless she was with her cherished possession, which brought her so much joy. The ambiguity of the song's lyrics made it more relatable, as fans could easily relate to losing an item of sentimental or personal value.

A Tisket, A Tasket
Ella Fitzgerald
[Chorus:]
A-tisket A-tasket
A brown and yellow basket
I send a letter to my mommy
On the way I dropped it

I dropped it
I dropped it
Yes, on the way I dropped it

A little girlie picked it up
And put it in her pocket

[Verse 1:]
She was truckin' down the avenue
Not a single thing to do

She went peck, peck
Pecking all around
When she spied it on the ground

She took it
She took it
My little yellow basket
And if she doesn't bring it back
I think that I will die
[Chorus:]
A-tisket A-tasket
I lost my yellow basket
And if the girlie don't return it
Don't know what I'll do

[Verse 2:]
Oh dear I wonder where my basket can be
(So do we, so do we, so do we, so do we, so do we)
Oh gee I wish that little girl I could see
(So do we, so do we, so do we, so do we, so do we)

Oh why was I so careless
With that basket of mine?
That itty bitty basket
Was a joy of mine!

[Chorus:]
A-tisket
A-tasket
I lost my yellow basket

Won't someone help me
Find my basket
And make me happy again?
[Verse 3:]

(Was it red?) No, no, no, no
(Was it blue?) No, no, no, no
Just a little yellow basket

Thru last week and this week I just burst out singing the chorus of this catchy tune by The Great Miss Ella Fitzgerald and I don't know why! I grew up with my Dad playing jazz on the piano at nights at our home and I've been a big fan of Miss Ella and Louis Armstrong for over 35 years now. They don't compose songs like this anymore....sadly!
