A Tisket a Tasket )
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

A-tisket, a-tasket
A brown and yellow basket
I send a letter to my mommy
On the way I dropped it

I dropped it, I dropped it
Yes, on the way I dropped it
A little girlie picked it up
And put it in her pocket

She was truckin' on down the avenue
But not a single thing to do
She went peck, peck, peckin' all around
When she spied it on the ground

She took it, she took it
My little yellow basket
And if she doesn't bring it back
I think that I will die

A-tisket, a-tasket
I lost yellow basket
And if that girlie don't return it
Don't know what I'll do

Oh dear, I wonder where my basket can be
(So do we, so do we, so do we, so do we, so do we)
Oh gee, I wish that little girl I could see
(So do we, so do we, so do we, so do we, so do we)
Oh, why was I so careless with that basket of mine
That itty-bitty basket was a joy of mine

A-tisket, a-tasket
I lost my yellow basket
Won't someone help me find my basket
And make me happy again, again

(Was it green?) no no no no
(Was it red?) no no no no
(Was it blue?) no no no no
Just a little yellow basket

A little yellow basket

Overall Meaning

The song A Tisket a Tasket by Ella Fitzgerald and the Chick Webb Orchestra is a playful tune about a little girl who loses her yellow basket. The lyrics describe how the singer, a little girl, was on her way to send a letter to her mommy when she dropped her brown and yellow basket. A younger girl picked it up and put it in her pocket. The song then goes back and forth between the singer and the little girl who picked up the basket, with the singer begging the younger girl to return the basket so she won't die, and the little girl insisting that she will return it. The song ends with the singer pleading for someone to help her find her basket so she can be happy again.

The lyrics to A Tisket a Tasket seem to be a lighthearted and playful way to explore themes of loss and carelessness. The singer's attachment to her little yellow basket is clear from the way she pleads with the little girl who picked it up to return it. The song also touches on the idea that sometimes we lose things because we are not careful enough, as the singer's careless handling of her basket led to her losing it. In this way, the song can be seen as an allegory for the idea that we should take better care of the things we value.

Thru last week and this week I just burst out singing the chorus of this catchy tune by The Great Miss Ella Fitzgerald and I don't know why! I grew up with my Dad playing jazz on the piano at nights at our home and I've been a big fan of Miss Ella and Louis Armstrong for over 35 years now. They don't compose songs like this anymore....sadly!
