After You've Gone
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

After you've gone and left me crying
After you've gone, there's no denying
You'll feel blue, you'll feel sad
You'll miss the dearest pal you've ever had

There'll come a time, now don't forget it
There'll come a time, when you'll regret it
Some day when you'll grow lonely
Your heart will break like mine and you'll want me only
After you've gone, after you've gone away

After I'm gone, after we break up
After I'm gone, you're gonna wake up
You will find you were blind
To let somebody come and change your mind

After the years we've been together
Thought joy and tears, all kinds of weather
Someday blue and downhearted
You'll long to be with me right back where you started
After I'm gone, after I'm gone away

You will find you were blind
To let somebody come and change your mind

Someday blue and downhearted
You'll long to be with me right back where you started
After I'm gone, after I'm gone away

you'll feel blue and you'll feel sad
You'll miss the dearest pal you've ever had

Someday when you'll grown lonely
Your heart will break like mine and you'll want me only
After you've gone, after you've gone away

You made and blue
But now I'm through with you

And there's nothing more you can say
So jack be on your way, miss Ella?s okay

Overall Meaning

The song "After You've Gone" talks about the aftermath of a separation. The first stanza has the singer telling their former partner that they will feel blue and sad after leaving, and they are going to regret leaving them because they will miss "the dearest pal" they ever had. The second stanza starts with the singer telling their former partner how they will feel once they, the singer, are gone. The singer says that their former partner will realize they were blind to let somebody else come and change their mind about leaving. The third stanza starts off by acknowledging that the previous verses all mention the inevitability of their former partner wanting to be with them again. The singer then says that they are done with their former partner and that there's nothing left to say, so their former partner should "be on your way."

The song is a classic example of the "break-up" song that has become a staple of the American pop songbook. Although the lyrics were written by Buddy DeSylva, the music itself was written by another famous composer, Harry Warren. The song originally appeared in the musical "Ziegfeld Follies of 1918." Ella Fitzgerald recorded her version of the song in 1963, and it became one of her signature songs. Fitzgerald often used the song to close out her live shows.
