Begin The Beguine
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When they begin the beguine
It brings back the sound of music so tender
It brings back a night of tropical splendor
It brings back a memory ever green

I'm with you once more, under the stars
And down by the shore, an orchestra's playing
And even the palms seem to be swaying
When they begin the beguine

To live it again is past all endeavor
Except when that tune clutches my heart
And there we are, swearing to love forever
And promising never, never to part

What moments divine, what rapture serene
'Till clouds came along to disperse the joys we had tasted
And now when I hear people curse the chance that was wasted
I know but too well what they mean

So don't let them begin the beguine
Let the love that was once a fire remain an ember
Let it sleep like the dead desire I only remember
When they begin the beguine

Oh yes, let them begin the beguine, make them play
'Till the stars that were there before return above you
'Till you whisper to me once more, darling, I love you

And we suddenly know What heaven we're in

When they begin the beguine
When they begin the beguine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ella Fitzgerald's song, "Begin the Beguine", reminisce about a time of love and romance, a memory from the past that is invoked through the sound of the beguine. The beguine is a slow, rhythmic dance that originates from the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique in the Caribbean. The song starts with the singer's reflection on how the sound of the beguine brings back memories of a night of tropical splendor and music. This moment of reflection takes her to a place where she has joined her lover once more, under the stars, hearing the orchestra play beside the shore, and seeing even the palms sway along to the music.

As the singer recounts this time with her lover, she reflects on how the clouds came along and dispersed the joys they had tasted. She acknowledges that people often curse the chance that was wasted, and she knows all too well what they mean. But she still longs to hear the beguine again and to have it transport her back to those moments of divine rapture. She implores whoever is listening to let them begin the beguine again and to let the love that was once a fire remain an ember, sleeping like the dead desire that she only remembers.

The song ends on a hopeful note. The singer urges whoever is listening to make them play and to keep playing 'til the stars that were there before return above you. She longs to whisper to her lover once more, telling him that she loves him. And in that moment, they both suddenly know what heaven they're in, as the beguine transports them back to that tropical night under the stars.

When I hear this Song ,( performed by Ella ) shivers run down my spine , in a very positive sense. !
I did hear this song ( living in Germany) for first time , by listening an Italian radio station, Approx . 1979,
Actually there was a daily program on the radio station every evening , that started with the Jingle
Of this song. I didn’t know the name of the song neither the person performing it. I just loved it.
I was 11 years old ( in 1979 ) , we only had 5 tv channels , so listening to the radio was often the better
Alternative. In a time where there was no mtv etc . Anyway, believe it or not , by listening Dinah Washington
And Nina Simone , I remembered the melody of , begin the beguine , and so thanks google and YouTube,
I finally listened the song again that I didn’t hear for decades , and in the full length , plus I get to know who
Was singing it . So that Voice was so special that it remained in my memory. If I hear that song now performed by
Others , I can’t feel any emotion, but with Ella I get goose skin . Thank you Ella , thanks to YouTube and the User who uploaded this song ,
thank you Rai Radio for the Jingle. Unforgettable. I love this kind of Music, Nat king Cole, Nina Simone , Louis Armstrong , Dinah Washington. Ella Fitzgerald. Thank you America!

She makes it sound easy, but this is a tricky tune to sing, since it moves around from one scale to another--Porter used 3 different modes when he wrote it, and it all falls into place so beautifully. And the band and strings are perfect--evocative and swinging. To think that Porter could come up with a complex tune like that and perfect lyrics to match. No collaborator needed. He had it all.

i bought the ella sings cole porter verve double album about 43 years ago. i thought this song was schmaltzier than most of the other Porter tunes on the album but over the years, it has really grown on me. love it.

Lady Ella was a singer in a class all by herself. She was incomparable. She makes Cole Porter very proud that his songs were sung so impeccable. 😁

Ella OWNS this song! The best rendition by far! If I had to take 10 albums to a desert island, one of them would definitely be her classic "The Cole Porter Songbook." Dinah Washington is my favorite female singer, but Ella's a close second!
