Bewitched )
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

After one whole quart of brandy
Like a daisy, I'm awake
With no bromo-seltzer handy
I don't even shake

Men are not a new sensation
I've done pretty well I think
But this half-pint imitation
Put me on the blink

I'm wild again, beguiled again
A simpering, whimpering child again
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

Couldn't sleep and wouldn't sleep
When love came and told me, I shouldn't sleep
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

Lost my heart, but what of it
He is cold I agree
He can laugh, but I love it
Although the laugh's on me

I'll sing to him, each spring to him
And long, for the day when I'll cling to him
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

He's a fool and don't I know it
But a fool can have his charms
I'm in love and don't I show it
Like a babe in arms

Love's the same old sad sensation
Lately I've not slept a wink
Since this half-pint imitation
Put me on the blink

I've sinned a lot, I'm mean a lot
But I'm like sweet seventeen a lot
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

I'll sing to him, each spring to him
And worship the trousers that cling to him
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

When he talks, he is seeking
Words to get, off his chest
Horizontally speaking, he's at his very best

Vexed again, perplexed again
Thank god, I can be oversexed again
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I

Wise at last, my eyes at last,
Are cutting you down to your size at last
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - no more

Burned a lot, but learned a lot
And now you are broke, so you earned a lot
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - no more

Couldn't eat, was dispeptic
Life was so hard to bear
Now my heart's antiseptic
Since you moved out of there

Romance, finis. your chance, finis.

Those ants that invaded my pants, finis.
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - no more

Overall Meaning

The song "Bewitched" by Ella Fitzgerald expresses feelings of being under the spell of infatuation and love. The first verse suggests the singer has been drinking heavily to cope with the end of a relationship, but is still awake and alert. The singer acknowledges that men are not new to her, but this particular man has induced bewilderment and infatuation.

As the song progresses, the singer describes the pain of unrequited love for a man who is seemingly indifferent to her. Despite his faults, the singer cannot resist the charms of this man and feels like a "babe in arms." The lyrics reveal that the singer is willing to endure the sadness and heartbreak that come with loving a man who is cold and unfeeling.

Y'know what? I've searched for years for anyone else who's recorded this same song, the FULL SEVEN MINUTES FIFTEEN SECONDS. I have yet to find any.

Yes, there's other recordings. Doris Day, about 2 m 42 s. Lady Gaga/Tony Bennet, 3 m 20 s. Kristin Chenoweth, 5 m. Linda Ronstadt, 4 m 26 s. And it goes on. Almost anyone who's a good singer has done this song, especially if its in their genre. Never ever have I seen anyone else do the FULL 7 m 15 s.

It would be really fabulous if someone could do this. I'm not really up to date on who's up & coming and such. My music tastes pretty much stop mid 70s. I mostly focus on country/bluegrass now (old and new)

Huh, just had a random remembering. Dolly Parton has not covered this song.

Well didn't realize I'd typed this much... if you get this far, thanks for "listening".

Gonna say gnite.

Lord, that must surely be the quintessential version of one of the most brilliant songs ever written!

Prior to watching Miss Ella's rendition of "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered" I had best loved Anita O'Day's version. (Which I will ALWAYS love!)

But I suspect Miss O'Day owes a great debt to Miss Ella in influencing the way she phrases the melody, the way she accentuates the harmony -- transitioning to the third, for example -- the way she runs down the scale exactly when and how Miss Ella did.

Am I a dope? Does everyone already know how much Anita O'Day was influenced by Ella Fitzgerald?

But then again, which female (or male) Jazz singer since the 1940s WASN'T influenced by Ella Fitzgerald?

The English language doesn't have enough superlatives to describe this woman's voice.
Listening to her sing is actually physically , mentally and emotionally uplifting.

Heaven, I'm in heaven
And how does she do that when she sings the word "and"
That's a rhetorical question

And those lyrics, I have never heard all those lyrics before.
The song is from the show
Pal Joey

@@elizabethmatz4356 Indeed, you don’t hear the originals anymore; they have been somewhat “sanitised”: “I worship the trousers that cling to him” wtf? Different times.

@@petergrudzinskas7154 That line made me rewind the video to make sure I heard that right. lol

I'm a retired voice teacher, and my mother worked as a radio and nightclub singer, so I can offer an authoritative opinion ; ) --Ella is the best popular singer of all time. Beautiful tone, excellent diction, perfect intonation, and perfect phrasing, along with a warm personality. Plus she could swing. I can't think of another singer who brought all these qualities together in quite the same way. But a few came close. Nat King Cole, Rosemary Clooney, Peggy Lee, and Sarah Vaughan come to mind....

@MarCapa-ed5uv

My wife is an opera singer, and she agrees with you.

I know squash about music but, my soul speaks directly to Ella’s singing.

@warmlavender5525

"I've sinned a lot. I mean a LOT." That line always makes me laugh, the way she sings it adds to the humor. I love this song, it's so vulnerable and Ella's voice is downright dreamy.

@ahvefun

she says "I'm mean a lot". However, yes, she's amazing
