Blue Moon
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blue moon you saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own

Blue moon, you knew just what I was there for
You heard me saying a prayer for
Someone I really could care for
And then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will ever hold
I heard somebody whisper "Please adore me"
And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold

Blue moon now I'm no longer alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own

And then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will ever hold
I heard somebody whisper "Please adore me"
And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold

Blue moon now I'm no longer alone

Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own

Overall Meaning

The song "Blue Moon" by Ella Fitzgerald is a classic love ballad that tells the story of a lonely heart that longs for someone to care for. The opening lines of the song depict the singer standing alone under a blue moon with no dream and no love in their heart. The "blue moon" metaphorically represents a rare or impossible event, just like finding true love seems impossible in the singer's life.

As the song progresses, the singer prays for someone to care for and love. The blue moon seems to understand the singer's plea and the only one who could ever fill the singer's arms appears before them. The singer is enveloped in a feeling of love and adoration for this person.

The song emphasizes that the moon has a transformative effect on the singer's love life. The blue moon turns to gold as soon as the singer meets the only one they will ever hold. The final lines of the song mirror the opening lines where the singer is no longer alone as they have finally found love in their heart and a dream in their life.

I had the privilege of seeing her perform / sing in Chicago about 1957 / 1958. Her voice, her characterizations of each song, her deeply beautiful voice and beautiful singing were all present. What was especially wonderful and amazing was the fact that she did all that with no stress, no breathing; she simply opened her mouth and all that beautiful music flowed out as if it were a simple sweet breath, like a young child blowing out birthday candle. She was total magic.

Her voice is pure velvet, cream, the gentle breeze upon skin, the tide rolling in and out...🙏

My beautiful mum sang this to me when I was a little girl. All over the world when we travelled to different places. It always felt like her soothing melody as she sang it to us before bed. I now sunny it to my children , but my mum died this year and I couldn’t see her pass because of covid. I wish I could ask her more questions . Blue moon - without a dream in my heart - without a love of my own. I hope you are dancing away up there when I sing this to my kids. My heart aches
