Overall Meaning

The lyrics in "Cotton Tail" by Ella Fitzgerald are a call-to-action for Benny Webster to come onto the stage and showcase his skills as a saxophonist in the piece. The first line, "Come on, wail," is emphasizing that it's time for the song to kick into high gear and for Cotton Tail to start playing. This is followed by the repetition of "Wail, Cotton Tail," as a way to exhort Cotton Tail to give it his all while playing his saxophone. The phrase "Benny Webster, come on and blow for me" is a direct request to Benny Webster, urging him to play his saxophone in the song, which he does as the saxophone melody takes over the track. The repetition of the line "That's Cotton Tail" reinforces the urgency and importance of showcasing Benny Webster's talent as his saxophone playing takes the song to new heights.

The use of the word "wail" in the lyrics is a reference to the blues tradition, where a musician would interpret and play with deep emotions to create a soulful sound. The lyrics also capture the competitive and cooperative nature of jazz music where musicians often encourage others to play with their best and work together to create something unique.

The best version of cottontail by Ella is her and Duke in the south of France. It needs to on video as it's a live version and her and Paul gonsalves do an over the top version. There are parts of the concert on video, but I haven't found cottontail. Love me some Ella.
