Do I Love You
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do I love you, do I?
Doesn't one and one make two?
Do I love you do I?
Does July need a sky of blue?
Would I miss you, would I
If you ever should go away?
If the sun should desert the day
What would life be?

Will I leave you, never?
Could the ocean leave the shore?
Will I worship you forever?
Isn't heaven forevermore?
Do I love you, do I?
Oh, my dear it's so easy to see
Don't you know I do, don't I show you I do?
Just as you love me

Will I leave you, never?
Could the ocean leave the shore?
Will I worship you forever?
Isn't heaven forevermore?
Do I love you, do I?
Oh, my dear, it's so easy to see

Don't you know I do, don't I show you I do?
Just as you love me

Overall Meaning

Ella Fitzgerald's song "Do I Love You" is a romantic ballad that explores the depth of love and dedication between two individuals. At the heart of the song's message lies the question of affection and commitment. The lyrics consist of a series of self-reflective questions, each building on the previous one, as the singer inquires about the true nature of their love. The song starts with the lines "Do I love you, do I? / Doesn't one and one make two?" These lines metaphorically point out the rational aspect of love, as in logic, one and one make two, and two partners come together to form one loving and dedicated relationship. The subsequent query is "Do I love you, do I? / Does July need a sky of blue?" The line invokes the image of a cloudless blue sky, which symbolizes the clarity and brightness brought by love in one's life.

As the song continues, the singer asks, "Would I miss you, would I / If you ever should go away?" This question emphasizes the idea of devotion and the significance of the other person in one's life. One of the most poetic lines in the song is "If the sun should desert the day / What would life be?" which expresses the essentiality of love in one's life, like the essentiality of the sun in the life cycle. In the chorus, the song brings together all the questions and answers that the singer has been pondering on. The singer affirms their love by saying, "Oh, my dear, it's so easy to see / Don't you know I do, don't I show you I do? / Just as you love me."

Absolutely wonderful One of Cole Porter's greatest songs sung as only the incomparable Ella could sing it At her best Ella's voice was completely faultless and this sort of gorgeous ballad could have been written for her Written for the show Dubarry was a Lady and introduced on Broadway by the great Ethel Merman and in the West End by Frances Day it was also recorded by Judy Garland and Peggy Lee but none of them came close to this sublime performance Thank you so much for posting

It’s so unknown compared to stuff like Begin the Beguine, You’re the Top, Anything Goes, Let’s Do It, etc. I’m guessing that’s because it’s just a simple ballad without the infamous Cole Porter word play and double entendres. I’ve loved it since the first time I heard it, but it reminds me more of maybe Rodgers and Hart. Cole Porter could do everything—hands down my favorite songwriter of that era.

This lovely song was left off the CD transfer from the LP of the Cole Porter Songbook. Why, is anyone's guess. It is Ella's displaying how elegantly she can interpret as simple ballad - no need for her colossal range and power, just a beautiful, intimate vow delivered with such earnestness that it would melt the heart of anyone lucky enough to receive it.

It's on the 2 CD set I have. Otherwise, I wouldn't have ever heard it. Maybe Verve released only a 1 CD set in the late 80s and a complete set in the 90s.
