Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Someone told someone and someone told you
But they wouldn't hurt you, not much
Since everyone spreads the story
With his own little personal touch

Do nothin' till you hear from me
Pay no attention to what's said
Why people tear the seam of anyone's dream
Is over my head

Do nothin' till you hear from me
At least consider our romance
If you should take the word of others you've heard
I haven't a chance

True, I've been seen with someone new
But does that mean that I'm untrue?
When we're apart, the words in my heart
Reveal how I feel about you

Some kiss may cloud my memory
And other arms may hold a thrill
But, please, do nothin' till you hear from me
And you never will

Do nothin' till you hear from me
Pay no attention to what's said
Why people tear the seam of anyone's dream
Is over my head

Do nothin' till you hear from me
At least consider our romance
If you should take the word of others you've heard
I haven't a chance

True, I've been seen with someone new
But does that mean that I'm untrue?
When we're apart, the words in my heart
Reveal how I feel about you

Some kiss may cloud my memory
And other arms may hold a thrill
But, please, do nothin' till you hear from me
And you never will

Some kiss may cloud my memory
But, please, do nothin' till you hear from me
And you never will

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ella Fitzgerald's song "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me" are a plea to a lover, asking them not to believe any rumors they may hear about the singer until they hear directly from her. The singer urges her lover not to tear the seam of anyone's dream, suggesting that rumors or gossip could be harmful to both parties. She then implores her lover to consider their romance, stressing that taking the word of others who may have heard rumors about her would be a mistake.

The singer admits that she has been seen with someone new, but argues that this does not necessarily mean that she is being unfaithful. Instead, the singer suggests that the words in her heart reveal how she truly feels about her lover. She acknowledges that other kisses or arms may hold a thrill, but emphasizes that her lover should wait until they hear directly from her before taking any action.

Overall, the lyrics to "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me" reflect themes of trust, communication, and patience. The singer is urging her lover to trust in their relationship, to communicate with her directly rather than relying on rumors or others' opinions, and to exercise patience in waiting to hear directly from her before making any assumptions or taking action based on hearsay.

@direfranchement

I have all of Ella’s songbooks. Of all of them, Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Songbook is the greatest. She sings the songs as though Duke wrote them just for her.

@direfranchement

No one sang Duke Ellington's material better than Ella. Of all the songbooks she recorded, she sounds the most natural on the Duke Ellington songbook. One would think he wrote the songs with her voice in mind.
