Everytime We Say Goodbye
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everytime we say goodbye, I die a little,
Everytime we say goodbye, I wonder why a little,
Why the Gods above me, who must be in the know.
Think so little of me, they allow you to go.
When you're near, there's such an air of spring about it,
I can hear a lark somewhere, begin to sing about it,
There's no love song finer, but how strange the change from major to
minor,
Everytime we say goodbye.
When you're near, there's such an air of spring about it,
I can hear a lark somewhere, begin to sing about it,
There's no love song finer, but how strange the change from major to

minor,
Everytime we say goodbye.

Overall Meaning

In Ella Fitzgerald's song "Everytime We Say Goodbye," the lyrics express the painful emotions of separation and loss. The repetition of the phrase "everytime we say goodbye" emphasizes the sense of finality and sadness that comes with parting ways. The singer wonders why the "Gods above me" allow her loved one to leave and questions her own worthiness to keep them near.

The imagery in the lyrics paints a vivid picture of the contrast between the joy of being together and the sorrow of saying goodbye. When the loved one is near, there's an "air of spring" and the sound of a lark singing. However, when they must part, the tone shifts from "major to minor," indicating a change from happiness to sadness. The love between the two is portrayed as something beautiful and rare, but also fragile and vulnerable to loss.

Cole Porter’s “Every Time We Say Goodbye” was introduced in the 1944 musical revue “Seven Lively Arts.”

Numerous notable covers include ones by Ray Charles, John Coltraine, Nina Simone, Carly Simon, Sarah Vaughan and Robbie Williams. But Ella Fitzgerald’s version (1956) is considered to be THE DEFINITIVE INTERPRETATION‼️

Cole Porter incorporated a musical joke in the song’s score by including a chord change that goes from minor to major in opposition to the lyric “how strange the change from major to minor.”

ONE AGELESS CULT CLASSIC❕ 💙🎵💜

Always loved, never forgotten, forever missed will you remain, Ella Jane Fitzgerald (1917 - 1996)… 🌹

This was the last song at my brother's funeral as we left the crematorium. Every time I hear it now it puts a tear in my eye as I miss him so much. Ella's diction is perfect and is a great lesson for anyone who wants to be a singer. I don't believe there will ever be another Ella.

@hellz1996

This was my parents 'song', he sang it to her when had to go back to the Army, mum said she used to cry everytime
Unfortunately it was both their songs at both their funerals. Most recently my mum's in September 2020.
I miss you mum and dad, beyond life, but you are back together now. xxxx

Your comment made me tear up. Ella was a favorite of both my parents. My late mom would play Ella's music while she cleaned house when I was a child in the early 1960's. My late father raved that Ella on the Memorex commercials was better than "half of the junk on the radio." At least we will always have Ella and great memories.

@@janettamcgee8124 It is a sad song isn't it? Ella came to play not far from where we live, my dad took my mum there, its funny how all the memories come flooding back of your childhood.
Please don't be upset x x

@riderudredd

Played this at my old mans funeral, He said this song was the only thing that ever brought a tear to his eye when he went to see her live. A true soother of the untamed soul.

At my dad's funeral, I was in charge of the tape player (people still used tapes then). I played Ella, alternating with Bing Crosby. He would have liked it.

@magdahearne497

It reminds me of my mum every time I hear it, she used to sing it a lot.... I'm sure our loved ones are just in the next room listening to it 💖

@patriciaphillips6644

I used to sing this to myself in the bath; I sounded good. Now I cannot get into the bath or out again for that matter but the beauty and memories associated with this song will never leave me.

@ericsaur9791

@canuteomanye5854
