Here's That Rainy Day
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I should have saved
Those leftover dreams
Funny
But here's that rainy day
Here's that rainy day
They told me about
And I laughed at the thought
That it might turn out this way
Where is that worn out wish
That I threw aside
After it brought my love so near
Funny how love becomes
A cold rainy day
Funny
That rainy day is here
It's funny
How love becomes
A cold rainy day

Funny
That rainy day is here

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of "Here's That Rainy Day" create an introspective and contemplative atmosphere as the singer reflects on their past. The phrase "I should have saved those leftover dreams" suggests that the singer had dreams and aspirations that were left unfulfilled or abandoned. The phrase "funny but here's that rainy day" alludes to the negative turn that life can take unexpectedly. The singer had been warned about the rainy day but had laughed it off, indicating they were unprepared for the misfortune that has come their way.

The next verse introduces another element of regret as the singer conjures up the memory of a "worn-out wish" they had let go of even though it had brought them love. The irony is palpable as they ruminate on the unpredictable nature of things, evident in the fact that the wish that had brought them love eventually became a source of pain, symbolized by a cold rainy day. The word 'funny' is repeated to highlight the dark irony in how life can surprise us, and we end up experiencing the very thing we thought we could avoid. In conclusion, the lyrics of "Here's That Rainy Day" highlight how past mistakes and regrets can come back to haunt us in unexpected ways.

Best version I've heard of this beautiful song. Ella is amazing!!

@richardcondon3797

A voice barely under control...it wants to go off into the heavens (and does).  Warm basso, sweet trills, a complete understanding of the lyrics, distinctive voice, that's ella.

@Triadboynuke

In my opinion - the best female vocalist of all time.

@wallycherry

Unbelievable version of one of the greatest tunes of the 20 Century.

@Nacho-Mamma

Beautiful songs require beautiful voices to make them work. Here ya go!
The greatest voice of all time! Long live the Queen of Jazz, Mrs. Ella Fitzgerald.

@rheaub2

The incomparable Ella, imao. She's 48 her. That wonderful, open, throat; that unforced tremolo; that incredible tonal accuracy. That modesty.
Just phenomenal (but she could sing the scales and she'd have me at "doh", I admit).

@robertneal9837

Well said and agreed. All time favorite female vocalist. Saw her once in the 80s in San Diego. Wish I could go back. No one delivers a song the way Ella did.

@quidagis33

Chills. Masterful.

@MrJpartridge

jimmy van heusen was one of the great composers of popular music yet largely forgotten. This was perhaps his masterpiece and this is one great interpretation by the greatest singers of popular music (yes in my opinion better than Sinatra)

I am running out of superlatives when talking abou Ella, superb rendition, emotion, peferct diction, perfect vocal control and her unique ability to reshape the melody, she has no equal.
