How High the Moon?
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somewhere there's music
How faint the tune
Somewhere there's heaven
How high the moon
There is no moon above
When love is far away too
Till it comes true
That you love me as i love you

Somewhere there's music
How near, how far
Somewhere there's heaven
It's where you are
The darkest night would shine
If you would come to me soon
Until you will, how still my heart
How high the moon

Somewhere there's music
How faint the tune
Somewhere there's heaven
How high the moon
The darkest night would shine
If you would come to me soon

Until you will, how still my heart
How high the moon

Overall Meaning

The song "How High the Moon" is a romantic ballad that speaks about the strength and persistence of love. The lyrics begin by stating that there is music and heaven somewhere waiting for the two lovers. The singer seems to believe that love is an eternal force that transcends time and space. Even when the lovers are apart, the hope for a bright future keeps them going.

The second stanza further elaborates on the longing that the singer and the lover have for each other. The darkest night becomes illuminated when the other person is near. Love fills the emptiness in the heart and makes everything seem possible. The singer implores the lover to come back soon, as their absence makes the heart still and motionless. The hope that they will be reunited seems to be the only thing that keeps the singer going.

Overall, the song is an ode to true love and its ability to overcome all obstacles. The melody and lyrics are beautiful and heartfelt, conveying a depth of emotion that is both touching and inspiring.

Does it reach out to mars

I never noticed this but at 2:01 she starts singing the melody to "Ornithology" by Charlie Parker, a song written over the chord changes of How High the Moon, and her scatting does it justice in a way few could. Just extraordinary.

@bodanliu

That's brilliant. I think there is another song at 4:15 do you know what song it is?

@Cheyne_TetraMFG

@@bodanliu I think that’s just the opening to William Tell Overture.
