I'm Old Fashioned
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am not such a clever one
About the latest fads
I admit I was never one
Adored by local lads

Not that I ever try to be a saint
I'm the type that they classify as quaint
I'm old fashioned
I love the moonlight
I love the old fashioned things

The sound of rain
Upon a window pane
The starry song that April sings

This year's fancies
Are passing fancies
But sighing sighs holding hands
These my heart understands

I know I'm old fashioned
But I don't mind it
That's how I want to be
As long as you agree
To stay old fashioned with me

I'm old fashioned
But I don't mind it
That's how I want to be
As long as you agree
To stay old fashioned with me

Oh won't you stay old fashioned with me
Oh please stay old fashioned with me

Overall Meaning

In the song "I'm Old Fashioned", Ella Fitzgerald sings about her love for traditional values and her disinterest in keeping up with the latest trends. She admits that she's not one to be adored by local lads and that she's often classified as "quaint." However, she finds beauty in the old-fashioned things like the moonlight, the sound of rain on a window pane, and the starry song that April sings. In her eyes, these things are eternal and they will never go out of style unlike the passing fancies of the current year.

Ella Fitzgerald sings about the unique value of old-fashioned romances that exist outside of the current trends. Despite the implication that she is not part of the current dating scene, she is willing to stand firm in her beliefs and remain old-fashioned. At the end of the song, she appeals to her lover to stay old fashioned with her.

Ella Fitzgerald's performance of "I'm Old Fashioned" is an ode to a bygone era, a time when people cherished tradition, and rejected fleeting trends. In the fast-paced modern world, it is easy to get swept away by the latest fads. This song serves as a reminder that there is value in staying true to oneself and one's beliefs.

Was there ever another vocalist with better pitch? Ella was a gift from God!

Dr. Gillian Piggott

Yes, Sarah Vaughan. Actually, she's better, I reckon.

As always, Ella is right on! This beautiful song is from the film " You Were Never Lovelier" with Rita Hayworth and Fred Astaire in 1942 and as they sang and danced to it, is a wonderful part of the film.

I've listened to every version of this song on YouTube, and this is the best. Ella and Nelson, what a perfect combination!

Ella's voice makes me feel like I was floating, it's absolutely perfect in every way that matters.
