I Can't Face The Music
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Breeze, stop moaning those wit melodies
My man has left me, so I can't face the music
Without singing the blues

Rain, your rhythm on my window pane
Drives me insane because I can't face the music
Without singing the blues
My heart is so broken
I've spoken to the Lord for a little sympathy
And if He don't help me, so help me
It's the bottom of the deep blue sea for me

I'm gonna end this misery; I'm almost crazy
'Cause I can't face the music
Without singing the blues

My heart is so broken
I've spoken to the Lord for just a little sympathy
And if He don't help me, so help me
Gonna jump to the bottom of the deep blue sea for me

I'm going to end this misery; I'm going crazy
'Cause I can't face the music
Without singing the blues

Tell you I'm almost crazy, baby
'Cause I'm tired of facing these blues

Overall Meaning

In this song, Ella Fitzgerald sings about a heartbreak and how she can't seem to move on from the pain that's caused her. She asks the breeze to stop moaning those sad melodies because her man has left her and she can't face the music without singing the blues. The rain's rhythm on her window pane drives her insane and further deepens her sorrow as she can't escape the feeling of sadness that engulfs her.

She reveals her heart is broken and she has talked to God for a little sympathy. She declares that if God doesn't help her out of this situation, she's going to the bottom of the deep blue sea. She is almost crazy because she can't seem to stop singing the blues and wants to put an end to her misery.

The lyrics of the song portray the pain and sorrow that come with heartbreaks, and how sometimes it feels like it's impossible to move on from the feelings that come with it. The song's melody, with its bluesy sound, perfectly complements the lyrics, making it an emotional and soulful track that showcases Ella Fitzgerald's incredible vocals.

Love Ella and the song, but don't care for the band, especially that dull drummer. She should have recorded this with her usual jazz trio.
