I Wish I Were In Love Again
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The sleepless nights, the daily fights
The quick toboggan, when you reach the heights
I miss the kisses, and I miss the bites
I wish I were in love again

The broken dates, the endless waits
The lovely loving, and the hateful hates
The conversation, with the flying plates
I wish I were in love again

No more pain, no more strain
Now I'm sane, but I would rather be punched, drunk

The pulled out fur, of cat and cur
The fine mismating, of a him and her
I've learned my lesson, but I wish I were
In love again

The furtive sigh, the blackened eye
The words: "I love you, 'til the day I day"
The self deception, that believes the lie
I wish I were in love again

When love congeals, it soon reveals
The faint aroma, of performing seals
The double-crossing, of a pair of heals
I wish I were in love again

No, no more care, no, no despair
Now I'm all there (now), but I'd rather be punk drunk

Believe me sir, I much prefer
The classic battle, of a him and her

I don't like quiet, and I wish I were
In love again, in love again, in love again

Overall Meaning

In Ella Fitzgerald's song "I Wish I Were in Love Again," the lyrics describe the ups and downs of a tumultuous romantic relationship. The opening lines set the scene for the chaos that follows, as the singer reminisces about the "sleepless nights" and "daily fights" she experienced with her lover. The next lines describe the exhilaration of their moments of passion and excitement, as though they are on a "quick toboggan" ride to the top of their emotions. Even though the relationship is clearly dysfunctional, the singer still longs for the "kisses" and "bites" she once shared with her partner.

As the song progresses, the lyrics begin to paint a more vivid picture of the couple's problems. They never seem to be on the same page, with "broken dates" and "endless waits" causing them to constantly disappoint one another. Even when they are getting along, their conversations often escalate to the point of "flying plates" being thrown. Despite all this, the singer still wishes she were back in the relationship, feeling the intense emotions that come with it.

Towards the end of the song, the lyrics become more fatalistic, acknowledging that relationships never last forever. Even when love does seem to be going well, it eventually "congeals" and reveals its true nature. The singer would rather be "punch drunk" than living without the highs and lows of a torrid love affair. Ultimately, the song seems to suggest that even though love can be painful and exhausting, it is still better than being alone.

I miss you, Ella Fitzgerald. The best I can do to describe your voice is bright, optimistic.

Having listened to Frank’s version I see Ella didn’t make the same mistake in respect of pace. Certainly much improved by the great “Lady” however, the lyrics by genius Lorenz Hart require a more nuanced approach which seem to lend itself to much earlier recordings or that of the incomparable Judy.
