Isn't It Romantic
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Isn't it romantic?
Music in the night, a dream that can be heard
Isn't it romantic?
Moving shadows write the oldest magic word

I hear the breezes playing in the trees above
While all the world is saying you were meant for love
Isn't it romantic?
Merely to be young on such a night as this?
Isn't it romantic?
Every note that's sung is like a lover's kiss

Sweet symbols in the moonlight
Do you mean that I will fall in love perchance?

Isn't it romance?
Sweet symbols in the moonlight
Do you mean that I will fall in love perchance?

Well stated, sir.

I just listened to about a dozen versions of this song -- Mel Torme, Tony Bennett, Bill Evans, etc . There were some very good versions, but this flat out blows everything else away. Ella is so phenomenal.

Oh my heavens, Ella is so phenomenal I couldn't even find words for it! I met her years ago in a little corner market at the edge of West Hollywood and Beverly Hills. She was utterly and absolutely unassuming which I still marvel at when I think of it, and the moments I spent talking with her are moments I will always treasure. I have a CD she gave me and a post card she signed. In my book, no better singer ever lived than Miss Ella Fitzgerald. I adore her and to behold the work, to listen to this cut, if it is not PERFECTION, well it's pretty damned close to it. Bless you Miss Ella and thank you forever for the priceless treasures you left for all of us to enjoy. What a wonderful thing, indeed.
