Lover Man
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't know why but I'm feeling so sad
I long to try something I never had
Never had no kissing
Oh, what I've been missing
Lover man, oh, where can you be

The night is cold and I'm so alone
I'd give my soul just to call you my own
Got a moon above me
But no one to love me
Lover man, oh, where can you be

I've heard it said
That the thrill of romance
Can be like a heavenly dream
I go to bed with a prayer
That you'll make love to me
Strange as it seems

Someday we'll meet
And you'll dry all my tears
Then whisper sweet
Little things in my ear
Hugging and a kissing
Oh, what we've been missing
Lover man, oh, where can you be

I've heard it said
That the thrill of romance
Can be like a heavenly dream
I go to bed with a prayer
That you'll make love to me
Strange as it seems

Someday we'll meet
And you'll dry all my tears
Then whisper sweet
Little things in my ear
Hugging and a kissing

Oh, what we've been missing
Lover man, oh, where can you be

Overall Meaning

The song "Lover Man" is a jazz ballad that was originally written by Jimmy Davis, Roger ("Ram") Ramirez, and James Sherman in 1941. It was first recorded by Billie Holiday, who made it a hit and popularized the song. The lyrics detail the longing and sadness felt by someone who is deeply in love with an unknown lover. The singer is yearning to experience something they have never had before, which is the love and affection of the "lover man" they seek. Yet, they are alone, cold, and feeling abandoned, desperately searching for their significant other, who seems to be missing from their life.

The lyrics reveal a sense of melancholy and desperation, but also of hope and longing, as the singer firmly believes that someday they will meet their "lover man" who will dry all their tears and fulfill their desires. The song portrays a universal theme of the endless quest for love and happiness that all human beings experience at some point in their lives. Ella Fitzgerald's version of "Lover Man" beautifully captures the emotions and soulful essence of the song, with her soaring vocals and heartfelt interpretation.

That's gotta be some of the best phrasing and most perfect pitch control I've ever heard in a live recording!... Ella was a genious and will always be remembered

@LlyleHunter

True artistry and real elegance as though she could paint lyrics into a microphone.

@sfdudeca

OMG!!! The opening when Ella is cooing I just melt!! That voice of perfection! And yes, she could hum the Yellow Pages, and I would be brought down along with wherever she'd be performing. I envy anyone who saw her live performances; I never got to. But we have as treasure her timeless recordings and videos of her extraordinary performances. What class, what a voice, what gorgeous music! I love you, Ella!

@reubenvaughngreene970

There is a reason why she was awarded 11 doctorate degrees from the nation's most prestigious universities. No other singer has accomplished that as well as being the most recorded female vocalist ever, with almost 250 albums to her credit. Indeed, tihe First Lady Of Song!!!! It just doesn't get any better than this. How fortunate we are to have experienced "The Wonder Of Ella".

@slipslider9048

Billie will always be the Queen of Jazz - through such hardship and abuse she pioneered female jazz vocals and her voice is truly unique and iconic. Ella is good, but Billie was a star.

@@slipslider9048 Ella was "good". You don't know music, my friend. Billie was "good". Ella was superb!

@Zianzio123

I agree with you Reuben.

@@slipslider9048 I think Billie Holliday was a superstar for a different reason than Ella was. Billie could tap into people's "mental" mind moreso and that made her unique and very very special as her voice was. But Ella was different, capturing best what the United States saw as the one of a kind, true American voice. And I can see why she easily fit that bill. Ella's sound was the perfect image of America when it came to music at the time. There were many very good singers at that time, but Ella's sound, her interpretation, her way of creativity could not be matched by anyone. I don't say these things lightly. Listen to her recordings or performances like these. She was the very best at what she did. It's beyond inspiring. And her infamous modesty, made her even more appreciated. She genuinely never thought she was as good as she was! But haha, she indeed was!

@@pookie3093 Sarah Vaughan was the best.

Nobody comes within a mile of Ella Fitzgerald. She was absolutely fantastic. It's all here in the fine detail. Just listen closely and realise that nobody else ever came close to her. The effortlessness and modesty she imparts are so refreshing in a world of so-called divas. She scales the octaves effortlessly and more importantly in theme with the sentiment... not just randon screams like lesser modern singers. Ella knew her song, knew the music and thank God people appreciate her today.
