Manhattan
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Summer journeys to Niagara and to other places
Aggravate all our cares, we'll save our fares
I've a cozy little flat in what is known as old Manhattan
We'll settle down right here in town

We'll have Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island too
It's lovely going through the zoo
It's very fancy on old Delancy Street, you know
The subway charms us so, when balmy breezes blow to and fro

And tell me what street compares with Mott Street in July?
Sweet pushcarts gently gliding by
The great big city's a wondrous toy just made for a girl and boy
We'll turn Manhattan into an isle of joy

We'll go to Yonkers where true love conquers in the whiles
And starve together, dear, in Chiles
We'll go to Coney and eat baloney on a roll
In Central Park, we'll stroll, where our first kiss we stole, soul to soul

And "My Fair Lady" is a terrific show, they say
We both may see it close some day

The city's glamor can never spoil the dreams of a boy and goil
We'll turn Manhattan into an isle of joy

Overall Meaning

The song "Manhattan" by Ella Fitzgerald speaks about the charms and beauty of New York City. The lyrics explore the idea of settling down in the city and turning it into an isle of joy. The first verse talks about the stresses of traveling in the summer and how a cozy little flat in the city will save from any troubles. The second verse is all about taking in the city's attractions- from the zoo to the subway- and finding joy in the everyday hustle and bustle of living in the city.

The third and final verse touches on the romantic aspects of the city. The idea of going to Yonkers to conquer true love and eating baloney on a roll at Coney Island show the simple pleasures that can be found in New York. The reference to "My Fair Lady" being a terrific show shows how the city is a hub of art and culture. The song ends by saying that even with all the glamor and excitement, New York City can never spoil the dreams of a boy and girl who are in love.

When my parents were dating in the early 50's, they were at a nightclub in Manhattan where Ella Fitzgerald was singing. She asked if anyone would like to come up on the stage and sing with her. My father had a really nice voice, so he stood up and sang with her. I tell everyone this, what an amazing time that must have been for him.
