Mis Otis regrets
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today
Madam
Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today
She is sorry to be delayed
But last evening down in Lover's Lane she strays
Madam
Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today
When she woke up and found that her dream of love was gone
Madam
She ran to the man who had led her so far astray
And from under her velvet gown
She drew a gun and shot her love down
Madam
Miss Otis regrets, she's unable to lunch today

When the mob came and got her and dragged her from the jail
Madam
They strung her upon the old willow across the way
And the moment before she died
She lifted up her lovely head and cried
Madam
Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today

When I was a lad, (I'm 58 now!) my Grandma used to sing this, & my Mum loved Ella. I don't know why it took me so long to listen to this, but what a combination of song & singing! Magic!

@drakestraw

Cole Porter wrote this song on a bet.  While at lunch one day, he bet his friends he could write a song based on the next line they heard away from their table.  A waiter appeared at a nearby table and declared, "Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today."

Another good Porter story: He was asked to write a song about Paris, and 'please don't put the words 'I Love Paris' in it, and off he went and did exactly that....

4-15-2022: I read that this is Queen Elizabeth's favorite song, so I had to look it up. What a voice Ella has!

For some reason, this song was running through my head during the night, so I wanted to check out the lyrics...which led me here.  There was no one like Ella.  I have many of her LP albums, but, alas nothing to play them on.  IIRR, you never heard any scandal or negative publicity about this great lady.  She just stood there and sang.  An album recorded live in concert featured her rendition of "Moonlight in Vermont" where she hits the most fantastic notes in one verse...absolutely unbelievable.  Thanks for the memories.
