My Funny Valentine
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Behold the way our fine feathered friend
His virtue doth parade
Thou knowest not, my dim-witted friend
The picture thou hast made
Thy vacant brow, and thy tousled hair
Conceal thy good intent
Thou noble upright truthful sincere
And slightly dopey gent

You're my funny valentine
Sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable, un-photographable
Yet you're my favorite work of art

Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little weak?
When you open it to speak, are you smart?
But don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine, stay
Each day is Valentine's Day

Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little weak?
When you open it to speak, are you smart?
But don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me

Stay little valentine, stay
Each day is Valentine's Day

Overall Meaning

The song "My Funny Valentine" is a melancholy yet endearing love song. The lyrics in the first verse are directed at a person who may not know the impact they have on the singer. The singer describes the person as a "fine feathered friend" whose virtue is on display, yet the person may not realize the image they are portraying. The singer notes that the person's appearance may not accurately reflect their good intentions or sincere personality, but rather makes them appear "dopey". However, despite these perceived flaws, the person is still adored and cherished by the singer.

The chorus of the song is a declaration of love, as the singer affectionately refers to the person as their "funny valentine" and "sweet comic valentine". The singer admits that the person's physical appearance may not be conventionally attractive, but they are still beautiful and captivating in their own way. The singer acknowledges the person's unique qualities that make them a "favorite work of art" and bring a smile to their heart. The last verse of the song reiterates the sentiment that the person should not change themselves to please others, but to remain true to who they are, as each day is an opportunity to celebrate their love.

I was born on St. Valentine’s Day and like a little monkey, was covered in hair. My beloved mother called me her funny valentine, much to the dismay and disapproval of the nurses. Thank goodness, she held firm to her acceptance for the rest of her life. ❤ RIP dear mother of mine.

The judges said that to the woman on Britain's got talent. She sang this song, and Simon said, "you could sing the phone book."

@stellas6474

Nobody sings this beautiful song like Ella Fitzgerald.

@danl.4743

Some little super talented girl comes close. Look for "Angelina Jordan My Funny Valentine".

@@danl.4743 I agree with you, Dan.
I always said that this jazz song was the most difficult one in Angelina's whole repertoire and that the fact that she was flawless in its delivery, taking into accont her young age at the time and its primitive recording, makes it her best overall accomplishment.
Still, Stella is right too, since Angelina herself never intended to sing it "like Ella Fitzgerald". Like for all her covers, she woud sing it her way and makes it her own, which is what any work of art should be, not a copy, but an original.

The best ever
