Night And Day
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Like the beat, beat, beat of the tom-tom
When the jungle shadows fall
Like the tick, tick, tock of the stately clock
As it stands against the wall

Like the drip, drip, drip of the raindrops
When the summer shower is through
So a voice within me keeps repeating you, you, you

Night and day, you are the one
Only you beneath the moon or under the sun
Whether near to me or far
It's no matter, darling, where you are
I think of you

Night and day, day and night, why is it so
That this longing for you follows wherever I go?
In the roaring traffic's boom
In the silence of my lonely room

I think of you
Night and day, night and day
Under the hide of me
There's an, oh, such a hungry yearning burning inside of me

And its torment won't be through
'Till you let me spend my life making love to you
Day and night, night and day

Night and day
Under the hide of me
There's an, oh, such a hungry yearning burning inside of me
And its torment won't be through

'Till you let me spend my life making love to you
Day and night, night and day

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ella Fitzgerald's song "Night and Day" describe a passionate love that cannot be dimmed by the changing of time and location. The first few stanzas describe how the sound of jungle drums, ticking clocks, and falling raindrops give way to a persistent reminder of the object of the singer's affection. The repetition of "you, you, you" represents an insatiable desire for this person, whether they're close or far away.

The chorus of the song repeats the title phrase and underscores the extreme intensity of the singer's feelings. The love she has for this person is so profound that it follows her everywhere she goes, whether she's in a crowded city or a quiet, lonely room. The longing she feels for this person is burningly intense, and the song ends by expressing her need to be with him day and night, in a perpetual cycle of love.

Overall, the theme of the song is the persistence of love over time and distance. Despite the passage of time and changing circumstances, the singer's passion for her lover never wanes. The use of sound imagery underscores the idea that no matter how different the world around her may be, the singer's love for this person remains constant.

Only 93,000 views in 10years??? Do people not realize that they're listening to a perfect singer with a perfect orchestration? Lady Ella was the best singer of her era. Still holds up.

@lennybuttz2162

Well there are probably 10+ videos of her singing this song so if you add them all together it's a lot of people. I think Judy Garland and Al Jolson were just as good as Ella. All 3 of them had an incredible talent and could do things with a song that other performers could only dream about.

You are SO RIGHT Norman ! People know and love the music but don’t know the artist!

@VOLITIONSPARK

@lennybuttz2162 Why compare them when the poster didn't? But your comment answers the question for me.
