On the Sunny Side of the Street
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Walked with no one and talked with no one
And I had nothing but shadows
Then one morning you passed
And I brightened at last
Now I greet the day and complete the day
With the sun in my heart
All my worry blew away
When you taught me how to say

Grab your coat and get your hat
Leave your worry on the doorstep
Just direct your feet
To the sunny side of the street
Can't you hear a pitter-pat?
And that happy tune is your step
Life can be so sweet
On the sunny side of the street

I used to walk in the shade
With those blues on parade
But I'm not afraid
This Rover crossed over

If I never have a cent
I'd be rich as Rockefeller
Gold dust at my feet

On the sunny side of the street
Grab your street

Overall Meaning

In "Sunny Side of the Street," Ella Fitzgerald sings about her transition from a lonely and helpless individual to a happy and optimistic one. Firstly, she highlights how she walked and talked with no one, her life being encapsulated by shadows of isolation. However, her outlook shifts when she meets someone, who imbues a sense of hope that brightens her life. Her tone takes on an upbeat nature, as she now greets the day and offers her entire self, with the sun at her heart. Here, she proclaims that everything she once worried about disappears with the newfound realization of joy. She advises us to leave our worries behind and walk towards the sunny side of the street, where we can revel in the joys of life. We will feel the pitter-pat of happiness in our steps, and life will be so sweet.

The song has its roots in the Great Depression era, when people were looking for hope and inspiration to push through the challenging times. The upbeat tune of "Sunny Side of the Street" served as an excellent balancing force, as the lyrics instilled a sense of optimism in listeners. Interestingly, the song broke from the then-famous trends of emphasizing the negative aspects of life through music. While other musicians sang about their troubles, Fitzgerald's song provided a non-judgmental, positive and cheerful outlook. The song's creators borrowed a few words from the "The Darktown Strutters' Ball" and used them in the composition. However, the upbeat melody and Fitzgerald's voice made it distinctive and unforgettable.

Ella Fitzgerald was simply the best. Cheers also goes out to the songwriting team of Jimmy McHugh (musical composer) and Dorothy Fields (lyricist). They wrote this gem way back in 1930 - Dorothy Fields was a real trail-blazer, as there were very few women doing what she did back in the day. Indeed, both of these talented individuals enjoyed long and very successful careers.

Mama, I have been thinking about you and all the best things about you. The sacrifices you made for us, your 4 kids
All the musical tunes you used to sing around the house.
You were my first teacher and the best mother ever.
I love and miss you.
