Show Me
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Won't you tell me
If we're heading for a fall
Are we still confused at all
Won't you tell me

Tonight
If we can move a little closer
If we can get a little deeper
We'll be complete

You got to show me
Assure me
Nothing will go wrong
You got to show me

Why you're holding on
You've got to show me
Assure me
Nothing will go wrong

You've got to show me
Why you're holding on

Maybe
You think it's not enough
Can't you see I'm trying hard
To be open

Tonight
If we get a little closer
If we get a little deeper
We'll be complete

You got to show me
Assure me
Nothing will go wrong
You got to show me
Why you're holding on

You got to show me
You got to show me
You got to show me
You got to show

You got to show me
Assure me
Nothing will go wrong

You got to show me
Why you're holding on

Overall Meaning

In the song "Show Me", Ella Fitzgerald sings about the need for open and honest communication in a relationship. The lyrics suggest that the singer is unsure about the state of their relationship and wants their partner to provide reassurance. The opening lines "Won't you tell me, If we're heading for a fall" indicate that the singer is wary of a potential breakup, but is unsure if their partner shares the same concerns. The lyrics "Maybe you think it's not enough, Can't you see I'm trying hard, To be open" suggest that there may be some miscommunication in the relationship or that the singer is making an effort to be more honest and vulnerable. Ultimately, the chorus "You've got to show me, Assure me, Nothing will go wrong", emphasizes the importance of openness and trust as the foundation of a healthy relationship.

The song "Show Me" was written by Frederick Loewe and Alan Jay Lerner for the musical "My Fair Lady". The musical premiered on Broadway in 1956, with Julie Andrews in the role of Eliza Doolittle. The song was later recorded by Ella Fitzgerald for her album "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Johnny Mercer Songbook" released in 1964.

Heard this great version all growing up in the late 60s/70s.  -- from my Mom's "The Best of Ella Fitzgerald" (Verve V6-8720).   That classic compilation also had such gems as "I Won't Dance" "Broadway" "When Your Lover Has Gone" "Sweet and Slow" and "Gone With the Wind".
