Something's Gotta Give
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somethings gotta give,
Somethings gotta give
Somethings gotta give
When an irresistible force such as you

Meets and old immovable object like me
You can bet as sure as you live
Something's gotta give, something's gotta give,
Something's gotta give.

When an irrepressible smile such as yours
Warms an old implacable heart such as mine
Don't say no because I insist.
Somewhere, somehow,
Someone's gonna be kissed.

So en garde who knows what the fates have in store
From their vast mysterious sky?
I'll try hard ignoring those lips I adore
But how long can anyone try?

Fight, fight, fight, fight, fight it with all of our might,
Chances are some heavenly star spangled night
We'll find out as sure as we live
Something's gotta give, something's gotta give,
Something's gotta give.

Fight, fight, fight it with all of our might,
Chances are some heavenly star spangled night
We'll find out as sure as we live
Something's gotta give, something's gotta give,

Something's gotta give.
Something's gotta , something's gotta give

Overall Meaning

The song "Something's Gotta Give" by Ella Fitzgerald is about the struggle of two people who find themselves attracted to each other despite their different circumstances. The lyrics suggest that one person is an irresistible force, while the other is an old, immovable object. The singer explains that when two opposing forces meet, something has to give. The song uses vivid imagery to describe the feelings of a person who is struggling to resist the advances of someone they find irresistibly charming.

The first stanza of the song sets the tone for the whole composition. The singer acknowledges that they are an old, immovable object that is no match for the irresistible force of the person they are enamoured with. They assert that when the two forces, the irresistible force and the immovable object, meet, something has to give. The singer's situation is one that many of us have found ourselves in - we fall for someone we know we should stay away from.

The second stanza describes how the person's smile has warmed the singer's heart, which they describe as an old, implacable object. The singer insists that they will not be deterred, declaring that "Somewhere, somehow, someone's gonna be kissed". The third stanza expresses the singer's confusion and implies that they don't know how to resist the charms of their love interest. The singer is torn between their feelings and their self-interest, and they are worried that they won't be able to resist temptation.

Overall, "Something's Gotta Give" is a charming and relatable song that depicts the struggles we all face when we're trying to resist temptation. It's about the tension that exists between our desires and our better judgment. The lyrics offer a unique perspective on the age-old problem of falling for someone who isn't right for us.

Ella Fitzgerald just got better and better and was at the top of her game in the 50's and 60's.  Her wide octave range and perfect clarity and phrasing of every lyric rated her perfection.  Always her best when backed up by musicians like Nelson Riddle.

You can tell when it's Nelson Riddle. Sound like Sinatra arrangements.
Perfection! Never tire of her! I get Zen when I listen to her!

In addition to Ella's great singing, Nelson Riddle's wonderful arrangement deserves much of the credit.

This popular standard was written for the 1955 musical Daddy Long Legs and performed by Fred Astaire. I loved it in that movie, but Ella's swingin' version is my all-time favorite.
