Speak Low
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Speak low when you speak, love
Our summer day withers away too soon, too soon
Speak low when you speak, love
Our moment is swift; like ships adrift, we're swept apart too soon

Speak low, darling, speak low
Love is a spark lost in the dark too soon, too soon
I feel wherever I go
That tomorrow is near, tomorrow is here and always too soon

Time is so old and love so brief
Love is pure gold and time a thief

We're late, darling, we're late
The curtain descends, everything ends too soon, too soon
I wait, darling, I wait
Will you speak low to me? Speak love to me and soon

Time is so old and love so brief
Love is pure gold and time a thief

We're late, darling, we're late
The curtain descends, everything ends too soon, too soon
I wait, darling, I wait

Will you speak low to me? Speak love to me and soon
Speak low

Overall Meaning

when you speak, love” is a song that speaks to the fleeting nature of love and how time seems to pass too quickly when two people are in love. The initial verse sets the tone for the rest of the song beautifully, in which the summer day "withers away too soon." The plea to "speak low" adds a sense of urgency and near desperation, as the singer implores their lover to speak in a soft and gentle tone, to savor the moment while they still can. The metaphor of ships adrift and being swept apart helps to illustrate how the two lovers are at the mercy of fate and time - always on the precipice of being separated.

The chorus cements the idea that love is fleeting and almost fragile, "Love is a spark lost in the dark too soon" coupled with the somber admission that no matter where they go, tomorrow is always too close, always too soon. The refrain about time being old and love so brief speaks to humanity's collective sense of dread about how the good things in life never seem to last long enough, always ticking away like sand in an hourglass.

The verses repeat and cycle back to the chorus for the remainder of the song, with the final plea to speak low to me and speak love to me and soon, bringing the song full circle. To summarize, "Speak Low" is a heart-rending commentary on the ephemeral nature of love and how time seems to always get in the way of true happiness. Ella Fitzgerald's smooth and velvety voice embodies the tender emotions of the lyrics and brings them to life in a way that few singers could.

This has got to be the best cover/version of this song, even though I love all the versions, simply because I love this song! Ella and Joe, such a magical/legendary pairing!

Sarah Vaughan's live recording from the London House is probably the best treatment this song has ever had. She was in prime voice and she really brought out all of the sensual, bedroom intimacy of the lyric. Ella here is unfortunately well past her prime. I wish she had recorded the song earlier with a small group, or perhaps even with Ellis Larkins...would have loved to have heard it.

direfranchement That version is also fine wine! But my all time favorite from this one is by Dee Dee Bridgewater! To me she takes the cake!..

Whenever I listen to a different version , instinctively after I revert back to Joe and Ella version.

Billie Holiday's is great too. Fantastic guitar on her 1952 version.

Scribbling Geek (Audacity3371)

So impossibly expressive. Ella's singing just fills you all over.

I never realized what a wonderful singing voice Ella Fitzgerald had. Now I realize she must have gotten that famous for a reason. This is the 2nd time I'm hearing her and she's just great.

This was recorded well into Ella's vocal decline in later life. She had developed an obvious vocal wobble, and her elegant phrasing had become abbreviated and choppy. She still brings out the magic of this song here, and I think perhaps it is because it's so stripped down that she is allowed to shine where she would perhaps have been less well fitted to the orchestral setting at this point in her career.

Dois gênios tocando uma linda canção !!!
