The Very Thought of You
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The very thought of you and I forget to do
The little ordinary things that everyone ought to do
I'm living in a kind of daydream
I'm happy as a king
And foolish though it may seem
To me that's everything

The mere idea of you, the longing here for you
You'll never know how slow the moments go till Im near to you
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
Its just the thought of you
The very thought of you, my love

The mere idea of you, the longing here for you
You'll never know how slow the moments go till I'm near to you
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above

Its just the thought of you
The very thought of you, my love

Overall Meaning

In Ella Fitzgerald's The Very Thought of You, the singer is expressing her feelings of infatuation towards someone. The very thought of this person is so overpowering that she forgets about normal, everyday things that she should do. She is living in a daydream where she feels happy and content, even though it may seem foolish to others.

The singer longs to be with this person, but they are far away, and she feels the moments drag on until they can be together again. She sees this person in everything around her, from every flower to the stars in the sky, and it is their mere idea that keeps her happy and fulfilled.

The lyrics of the song capture the overwhelming feeling of love that can consume a person's thoughts and emotions. It illustrates the idea that love can make one feel as if their world revolves around one person and can make everything else seem insignificant in comparison.

@Apollo949

This is the best version of this lovely song. Well done Ella.

She had a vocal range that few of the great opera singers have matched, at any point in history.When she was first "discovered" aged 15, she was homeless, living in alleyways, eating out of bins. Every single note she sings, she sings better than anyone else could ever and perhaps will ever equal. That sounds just like a fan gushing, but seriously, listen to the way she hits each consecutive note. It's unique.

"Fan gushing"? I don't think so. My ears and my heart respond in exactly the same way. I'd say you've got it dead right!

twangbarfly Belated thanks!

***** Cheers!

@doc2skate

When my dad used to talk about singers such as Ella, Billie Holiday, Etta James and Lena Horne, I thought it the ramblings of a man gone mad. It's amazing how much sense the old man's words make now.

Future generations will marvel at the talent of Ella Fitzgerald.
