Walkin' by the River
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's dew upon the ground
And not a soul in sight;
I'm walkin' by the river
'Cause I'm meeting someone there tonight!
I hear a distant sound,
I see a far-off light;
I'm walkin' by the river
'Cause I'm meeting someone there tonight!

The murmuring waters say
There's no time to delay,
So hurry on your way, my friend!
If you don't get there soon,
There may not be a moon
To guide you to that happy end!

My heart is riding high,
My blues have taken flight,
I'm walkin' by the river
'Cause I'm meeting someone there tonight!

My heart is riding high,
My blues have taken flight,

I'm walkin' by the river
'Cause I'm meeting someone there tonight!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ella Fitzgerald's song "Walkin' by the River" tell the story of a person walking beside a river, awaiting a meeting with someone special. The setting is peaceful and quiet, with dew on the ground and no one else in sight. The singer is filled with anticipation as they hear a distant sound and see a far-off light, heightening the sense of excitement and possibility.

The murmuring waters of the river serve as a metaphorical messenger, urging the singer to not delay and hurry on their way to meet their awaited companion. The urgency is emphasized by the mention that if they don't arrive soon, there may not be a moon to guide them to their desired happy ending. The combination of the river's sounds, the anticipation, and the metrical movement of walking creates a feeling of heightened emotion and anticipation.

The lyrics also convey the singer's state of mind. Their heart is described as "riding high," indicating a sense of joy or elation, while the mention of the blues having taken flight suggests a departure from previous melancholy or sadness. This juxtaposition of emotional states emphasizes the transformative power of love or the prospect of meeting someone special.

Overall, "Walkin' by the River" paints a vivid picture of a person eagerly strolling along a riverbank, on the brink of meeting someone who holds great importance to them. It captures the sense of anticipation, hope, and emotional highs that come with the possibility of a meaningful connection.

A big band version of this song was wonderfully done by Johnny Long. Yes this is another song enjoyed by The Greatest Generation.

I'm trying to find another version of this song. I'm not sure who sang it, but I believe it was a group from one of the big bands from the 40's...I had the album many years ago and I can't find it anywhere. Thanks in advance.

Ikr? It was Erskine Hawkins. Not sure who the male singer was. We had an old (factory) compilation tape lying around the house, and it was on there. The tape later got thrown out by mistake. I LOVED that version! I love Ella too, and do listen to this version, but I liked the Hawkins version better.

Any one have a copy by Glenn Miller featuring Marion Hutton ?

@juanlespin

Una Mae Carlisle has a better version. Something rare in the Ella catalogue.
