You'll Have To Swing It
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mister Paganini, please play my rhapsody
And if you cannot play it, won't you sing it
And if you can't sing it, you simply have to
swing it
I said swing it
Oh-oh-oh swing it
And don't ding it
Oh mister Paganini, we breathlessly await
Your masterful d‚tente, go-o on and sling it
And if you can't sling it
You'll simply have to swing it
I said swing it
And scattywahwah
And wahdyscatla

We've heard your repertoire and
At the final bar
We've greeted you with wild applause
But what a great ovation
Your interpretation
Pat-scoodle-atty-doody yeah yeah yeah

Oh Mister Paganini, now don't you be a meanie
What have you up your sleeve, go on and spring it

And if you can't spring it, you'll simply have to
swing it

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ella Fitzgerald's song You'll Have to Swing It are a playful and playful ode to the power of music and the ability to improvise and adapt. The song begins with a request to virtuoso violinist Niccolò Paganini to play the singer's rhapsody. However, the song takes a humorous turn when it turns out that Paganini is unable to play or sing the rhapsody, at which point the singer insists that he simply "swing it."

The lyrics use playful scatting and slang to convey the idea of musical improvisation, demonstrating the singer's confidence in the power of music to connect people and create a sense of joy and community. Throughout the song, the singer encourages Paganini to improvise and adapt, suggesting that even if he can't play or sing the song exactly as written, he can still find a way to "swing it" and create something unique and enjoyable.

Overall, You'll Have to Swing It is a fun and lighthearted tribute to the creative power of music and the joy that comes from improvising and adapting to changing circumstances.

I personally feel that Ella Fitzgerald is the greatest non-classical female singer of the 20th century.

@GarthAstrology

And Billie Holiday the most important.

While Billie Holiday was an important voice of her time, I believe most important also goes to Ella as well. If it had not been for her stepping up and taking over as both lead & director of her band after her husband died, none of these female singers, BLACK & WHITE ALIKE, would be where they are today. And, because of that, they owe her every ounce of respect she is due & so justly deserves.
I know it's a free country and everyone is allowed their own opinion. But, I just wanted to give you something to think about, purely out of my love of the truly greatest voice of jazz, blues, big band & even classical. Her rendition of Gershwin's "Summertime" from her final concert in Germany still makes me cry.
Just speaking out of our shared love for an amazing artist.

There's absolutely nobody that can begin to compare to this amazing vocal queen! She is what everyone who's ever tried to scat wishes they were, but knows they'll never be. Although it had already existed, Ella is the reason scat became such an integral part of jazz.
I mentioned her final concert in Germany in another reply to you. But, one of her last songs of that concert was "Mr. Paganini". She surprised the audience with 18 minutes of scatting that included parts from nearly 100 different songs. And she received an almost 10 minute standing ovation.
I fell in love with her voice when I was only 4 or 5. Now, I'm pushing 60, and my love for her has only gotten stronger.

@@Nacho-Mamma Ella is the greatest singer of the 20th century, but Billie Holiday is the most important. Lady is the one who taught all of us what it was to sing like an American. I used to work in a department store with a woman who sang with Les Brown. When I mentioned Billie Holiday, she immediately cut me off and said "Everybody copped her phrasing." And it's true. She is the most influential singer of the 20th century.

The late great Nancy Wilson said Ella Fitzgerald is the gold standard to this day and this performance is 100% proof of that . Just simply effortless.

@lonestarfriend

Absolutely superb. The a capella verse, the tempo changes, the phrasing, and of course, the voice and the scat singing. She was the best.

America and the World misses you.

@wsidechris

Ella was a living music machine. You could take away the band and she’s still be enthralling. Brava!
