Love Is Here To Stay
Ella Fitzgerald & Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's very clear our love is here to stay
Not for a year, but ever and a day
The radio and the telephone and the movies that we know
May just be passing fancies and in time may go

But, oh, my dear, our love is here to stay
Together we're going a long, long way
In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble
They're only made of clay
But our love is here to stay

In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble

They're only made of clay
But our love is here to stay

Overall Meaning

The song "Love Is Here to Stay" is a classic love song that was originally written by George and Ira Gershwin in 1937. It was first featured in the 1938 film, "The Goldwyn Follies". The song is an expression of unwavering commitment and determination of the couple's love for each other. The lyrics suggest that while things around them may change, their love will remain constant and unbreakable.

The first two lines of the song, "It's very clear our love is here to stay, not for a year, but ever and a day" set the tone for the rest of the song. The singer expresses confidence in their relationship and makes a commitment to their partner that their love will maintain an ever-lasting bond that will carry them through all obstacles. The rest of the song only reinforces this confidence as the singer assures their beloved that their love will withstand the test of time.

The chorus of the song, "In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble, they're only made of clay, but our love is here to stay", is the most memorable part of the song. The Gershwin brothers used the metaphor of physical structures that may stand tall one moment, but will eventually erode or fall. However, the strength and durability of a couple's love could never be undermined, they concluded.

“Love Is Here to Stay” was the last musical composition George
Gershwin completed before his death on July 11, 1937. Ira Gershwin wrote
the words after George's death as a tribute to his brother’s passing.

Originally titled "It's Here to Stay" and then "Our Love Is Here to
Stay", the song was finally published as "Love Is Here to Stay". Ira
Gershwin said that he wanted to change the song's name back to "Our Love
Is Here to Stay" for years, but felt that it wouldn't be right since
the song had already become a standard.

Ella had the greatest diction of any singer. You never asked yourself, "What did she just say?" You understood every word she sang with that perfect voice. What a treasure she was!
