Angel Eyes
Ella Fitzgerald & Layo & Bushwacka! Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I try to think that love's not around
But it's uncomfortably near
My old heart ain't gaining no ground
Because my angel eyes ain't here

Angel eyes, that old devil sent
They glow unbearably bright
Need I say that my love's misspent
Misspent with angel eyes tonight

So drink up all you people
Order anything you see
Have fun you happy people
The laughs and the jokes on me

Pardon me but I got to run
The fact's uncommonly clear
Got to find who's now number one
And why my angel eyes
Oh, where is my angel eyes

Excuse me while I disappear

Overall Meaning

The song "Angel Eyes" by Ella Fitzgerald is about heartbreak and longing for someone who is no longer there. The singer tries to convince herself that love is not around, but the pain of missing her love becomes unbearable. The lyrics suggest that the singer's heart has not been able to move on from the person she loves because their "angel eyes" are not here. The phrase "angel eyes" is used as a metaphor for the irresistible charm of the person she loves.

The singer is aware that her love is misspent, but she cannot help herself. She knows that her love for this person is causing her pain and making her the subject of ridicule among others. The singer is seen as a joke by the people around her, yet she is unable to stop herself from loving someone who does not reciprocate her feelings.

The song ends on a sad note as the singer realizes that she needs to move on and forget about her beloved. She needs to find out who her top priority should be and let go of the past, even if it means letting go of the one she loves. All in all, "Angel Eyes" is a poignant and emotional song about the pain of unrequited love.

I first heard it on live365, shortly after Remixed Vol. 2 was released. I ended up making it my MySpace page music. Before Facebook came along and destroyed MySpace. Lol

It was accidental because it was just looking for different music and it was on a station that played random downtempo tracks.

I think I heard Lovage, Fink and Aya for the first time, too.
