I Got It Bad
Ella Fitzgerald ( track dates) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The poets say that all who love are blind
But I'm in love and I know what time it is
The good book says, "Go seek and ye shall find"
Well, I have sought and my, what a climb it is!

My life is just like the weather
It changes with the hours
When he's near I'm fair and warmer
When he's gone I'm cloudy with showers

An emotion like the ocean
It's either sink or swim
When a woman loves a man
Like I love him

Never treats me sweet and gentle, the way he should
I got it bad and that ain't good
My poor heart is sentimental, not made of wood
I got it bad and that ain't good

But when the weekend's over and Monday rolls around
I end up like I started out just cryin' my lil' heart out
He don't love me like I love him
No, nobody could, I got it bad and that ain't good

So bad, so bad

I got on it so bad, so bad though folks with good intentions
Tell me to save my tears
I'm glad, I'm mad about you, I can't live without you
Lord above me make him love me the way he should

Like a lonely weeping willow lost in the wood
The things I tell my pillow

No woman should
I got it bad, bad so bad and that ain't good

Overall Meaning

In Ella Fitzgerald's I Got It Bad, the singer expresses her deep love for a man who does not reciprocate her affection as strongly. The first verse reflects on how love is often seen as irrational, but the singer knows exactly what she feels for this man. Despite the fact that she has looked for love and found it, the second line of the poem suggests that love is a burden. She has climbed to reach this point of love, and now it is weighing her down.

The second verse uses weather as a metaphor for her emotional state. She is fair and warm when her lover is near, but cloudy with showers when he is gone. Her love is all-consuming and either sink or swim. Despite the fact that her lover does not treat her the way she thinks he should, she continues to love him. In fact, she cannot live without him.

The chorus reveals that she has got it bad, and it is not good. She is a sentimental person with a poor, vulnerable heart. The final verse shows the singer begging for divine intervention, asking the Lord above to make her lover love her the way she loves him. She feels so lonely and lost without him, crying her heart out when he is not there. The bridge concludes the song with the repeated refrain that she has got it bad, bad so bad, and that ain't good.

Never treats me sweet and gentle
The way he should
I've got it bad
And that ain't good
My poor heart is so sentimental
Not made of wood
I've got it so bad
And that ain't good

But when the fish are jumpin'
And Friday rolls around
My man an' I, we gin some
We pray some, and sin some
He don't love me like I love him nobody could

Lord above me make him love me the way he should
I got it bad and that aint good
Now maybe I’m wrong to feel the way I do
I know my heart wouldn’t take somebody new
I got it bad and that aint good
