You're Blasé
Ella Fitzgerald Stan Getz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're deep just like a chasm
You've no, enthusiasm
You're tired and uninspired
You're blase

Your day is one of leisure
In which you search for pleasure
You're bored when you're adored
You're blase

While reaching for the moon
And the stars up in the sky
The simple things of normal life
Are slowly passing by

You sleep, the sun is shining
You wake, its time for dining
There's nothing new for you to do
You're blase

While reaching for the moon
And the stars up in the sky
The simple things of normal life
Are slowly passing by

You sleep, the sun is shining
You wake, its time for dining
There's nothing new for you to do
You're blase

Blase

Overall Meaning

is a French term that means indifferent or bored, and it is used to describe someone who lacks enthusiasm or energy. In Ella Fitzgerald's song, "You're Blase," she sings about a person who is dull, uninterested, and uninspired. The opening lines of the song, "You're deep just like a chasm, You've no enthusiasm," set the tone for the remainder of the song, which describes someone who is emotionally detached and uninvolved.

In the second verse, Fitzgerald describes how this person spends their leisure time searching for pleasure but ultimately finding themselves bored even when they are adored. The song suggests that this person is not interested in the simple pleasures of life, choosing instead to focus on more extravagant pursuits which they may not even enjoy.

The third verse implies that this person is missing out on the beauty of life by focusing exclusively on lofty goals and ambitions. Despite their constant pursuit of the moon and stars, they cannot appreciate the small joys that life has to offer. In the final verse, Fitzgerald concludes that this person is living a monotonous life in which the days blur together, and they lack any sense of novelty or excitement.

Ella just kills every song. She is perfect. How did she perform at such a high level for so long?

@AndrewRudin

My God.... is Ella great.... or WHAT?! Why do I need reminding?! And Sten Getz into the bargain. Who could ever be so blasé not to wake up from this?

Beautiful song!  Great saxes.  Like Frank Sinatra, Ella was one of a kind, no other female has or probably will reach her level.

@Satoshi9801

I'd say the same about Stan Getz with the tenor sax.

Such a great song!! With cool Stan Getz at saxo, it is one of the songs of my life. Would add it is one of the best of sung jazz music, along with "How Deep is the Ocean" or "I'll Be Seeing You" ou or "I'll Cover the Waterfront". Stan Getz and Ben Webster are my favorite saxos. You may say I like sweet or kind of ballads jazz, and it will be true. Though of course like Bill Evans on piano or Miles Davis and Chet Baker, too. But this song stands as a landmark as composition in sung jazz. Besides being sensitive think it has clever lyrics and the saxo makes it unique. With the "Speak Low" rendition of Carmen Mc Rae, or the "Seasons" of Sarah Vaughan, as with the above mentioned ones, this one stands as one of the great American standards, in the jazz songbook.
