April in Paris
Ella Fitzgerald feat. Louis Armstrong Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

April in Paris, chestnuts in blossom
Holiday tables under the trees
April in Paris, this is a feeling
No one can ever reprise

I never knew the charm of spring
Never met it face to face
I never new my heart could sing
Never missed a warm embrace

Till April in Paris
Whom can I run to
What have you done to my heart

Yes, April in Paris, chestnuts in blossom
Holiday tables under the trees
April in Paris, this is a feeling
No one can ever reprise

I never knew the charm of spring
Never met it face to face
I never new my heart could sing
Never missed a warm embrace

Till April in Paris
Now whom can I run to
Oh, what have you done to my heart

I never knew the charm of spring
Never met it face to face
I never new my heart could sing
Never missed a warm embrace

Till April in Paris

Whom can I run to
What have you done to my heart

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of April in Paris by Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong captures the essence of the feeling of being in the city during the spring season when nature is at its most beautiful. The song is full of imagery that evokes the sights, smells, and sounds of the city during that time, such as chestnuts in blossom and holiday tables under the trees. The song’s opening lines set the scene for a romantic holiday in Paris, with tables set up in the outdoors, chestnuts in bloom and a feeling that no other city can replicate. The lyrics are about the joy of being in love, and the overwhelming sense of happiness that comes with experiencing the city in full bloom.

The song also speaks to the transformative power of Paris, as the singer is changed by the city in many ways. The charm of spring is new to the singer, who had never met it face to face before the trip to Paris. The singer is also transformed by the positive energy of the city around them, as their heart sings for the first time and they feel a sense of warmth and comfort that they had never known. Thank you for posting this song. My late wife and I were always considered boring by friends and family because we would spend a Friday night in the living room, with cocktails on our hands, listening to music like this, then finishing the night (that's after having 5 drinks or so each) with dinner that we both cooked. even though we are a world apart, you will always be part of my heart darling.
