Lay Down
Ella Henderson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Won't you lay down and tell me the places you've been
Won't you lay down and relive your story again
If things could turn back around I know I would do anything
Won't you lay down, 'cause I know that heaven's waiting

Won't you stay now, there's so much that's never been said
Won't you stay now, remind me to never forget
And I, I won't break down, I don't want to live with regret
Won't you stay now, I'll be by your side 'til the end

You've been to places I've never been
Built your walls so high but you'd always let me in
You showed me that love can build a home
But now I see, that it's time to let you go

Won't you lay down and tell me the places you've been
Won't you lay down and relive your story again
If things could turn back around I know I would do anything
Won't you lay down, 'cause I know that heaven's waiting

And oh, and oh

If things could turn back around, I know I would do anything
Won't you lay down, 'cause I know that heaven's waiting

Overall Meaning

The song "Lay Down" by Ella Henderson is a heart-wrenching ballad that speaks about the pain of losing someone you love and reminiscing the memories shared with them in the past. In the first verse, the singer asks the person to lay down and narrate the story of the places they have been to. She urges them to relive the memories they once shared, and if things could turn back around, she would do anything to make things right. The lyrics depict a deep sense of longing and regret for not cherishing the moments they had together.

The second verse shows the regret the singer feels for not having said everything that needed to be said. She wants the person to stay and never forget the good times they had together. The singer promises not to break down and live with regret. If the person stays, she will be by their side until the very end. The lyrics show a sense of wanting to make up for lost time and regretting not having voiced her feelings earlier.

The chorus and the bridge of the song repeat the same lines, urging the person to lay down and relive their memories once again. The lyrics showcase the fear of loss and the wish to reconcile before it is too late. The repetition of lines emphasizes the feelings of regret and longing for holding onto the past.

YouTube recommend this song to me, only got to know Ella through Tom Grennan and Jax Jones, I have just sat with my 91 year old mom for the last 4 weeks of her life and feel this song could have been written for me to her, I don't know if it is written for some one specific, but it is beautifully sad and sung with a beautiful voice ๐Ÿ˜ขx
