SAY SOMETHING
Ella Henderson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'll be the one, if you want me to
Anywhere, I would've followed you
Say something, I'm giving up on you

And I, am feeling so small
It was over my head
I know nothing at all

And I, will stumble and fall
I'm still learning to love
Just starting to crawl

Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you
Anywhere, I would've followed you
Say something, I'm giving up on you

And I will swallow my pride
You're the one, that I love
And I'm saying goodbye

Say something, I'm giving up on you
And I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you
And anywhere, I would've followed you

Say something, I'm giving up on you
Say something

Overall Meaning

Ella Henderson's emotionally charged song Say Something is a plea for communication between two people struggling with their relationship. The first verse starts with the singer asking for some response from the other person, that she is giving up on them and is ready to walk away without any acknowledgment from their end. She speaks of being the one to come forward and make the effort, but it's not enough, unless reciprocated. The phrase 'Anywhere, I would have followed you' conveys the depth of the singer's sentiments and showcases the lengths she was ready to go to save the relationship.

The second verse highlights how the lack of communication and response has made the singer feel small and clueless, as if she is in over her head, unable to make sense of what's happening. She talks about her struggle to learn to love and how it's a process - one where she's still learning to crawl. The chorus is repeated, along with the plea to say something, and the sentiment of wanting to follow the other person anywhere they go. The bridge of the song shows the singer swallowing her pride as she admits her love for the person and says goodbye, hoping that the other person will at least acknowledge her feelings one last time.

Overall, the song is a poignant reminder of how vital communication is in any relationship, and how silence can be a deal-breaker. The lyrics are emotive, and Ella Henderson's powerful voice adds to the depth of the song.

I've loved Ella since her X factor days. Never understood why she didn't win as she was way better than the others. Such a great composer as well as a brilliant singer and performer.

Terry Haywood

James was the .right one to win. Although Ella was unique.

Dayna Bods

Ella would have disappeared without trace if she’d won Simons manufactured pop star. This girl has real talent and writes her own music which is where others have failed Leona for example. Adele was an album before hitting it big Ella is still very young all I can say is watch and wait this girl is going to be massive!

Ricks Romz Uk

She lost because the public wasn't voting for her or James Arthur because they just thought it was a given they would get through because they was the best 2 singers in it by far, but they had to have a sing of and even though she is awesome James Arthur smashed the sing off and was better than her on that

Brian Swinford

My personal theory is :Probably because she already had a deal before the show ended. Just like Adam Lambert didn't win American Idol. I cannot prove this but its really the only logical explanation .

She has one of the best natural female voices i've ever heard, possibly the best ever.

I very much like the singing/voices of: Ella Henderson,Birdy & Adele.
