Lights
Ellie goulding Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Losing it all on my own
I had a heart then
But the queen has been overthrown
And I'm not sleeping now
The dark is too hard to beat
And I'm not keeping up
The strength I need to push me
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shine them when I'm alone
And so I tell myself that I'll be strong
And dreaming when they're gone
'Cause they're calling, calling, calling me home
Calling, calling, calling home
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shine them when I'm alone
Noises, I play within my head
Touch my own skin
And hope they'll still be there
And I think back to when
My brother and my sister slept
In another place
The only time I feel safe
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shine them when I'm alone
And so I tell myself that I'll be strong
And dreaming when they're gone
'Cause they're calling, calling, calling me home
Calling, calling, calling home
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shine them when I'm alone
(Lights, lights, lights, lights, lights, lights)
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shine them when I'm alone
And so I tell myself that I'll be strong
Dreaming when they're gone
'Cause they're calling, calling, calling me home
Calling, calling, calling home
You show the lights that stop me turn to stone
You shine them when I'm alone
Home, home
(Lights, lights, lights)
Home, home
(Lights, lights, lights)
At the start of the song, Ellie Goulding mentions that she used to be independent in life, but then lost her way. She used to have a heart that guided her, but it seems that it was overthrown by someone, probably a lover or a significant person. The darkness is getting to her, and she couldn't keep up with the strength she needs to keep moving forward. However, someone in her life shows her the light, which stops her from turning to stone, and he/she only shines it when she's alone. Goulding tells herself to be strong, to keep dreaming, and to find that safe place, as they keep calling her home.
