Roscoe
Ellie Goulding Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Stonecutters made them from stones
Chosen specially for you and I
Who will live inside

The mountaineers gathered tinder piled high
In which to take along
Driving many miles, knowing they'd get here
When they got here, all exhausted
On the roof leaks they got started
And now when the rain comes, we can be thankful

Ooh, ah, ooh
When the mountaineers saw that everything fit
They were glad, and so they took off

Thought we were due
For a change or two
Around this place

When they get back, they're all mixed up with no one to stay with

The village used to be all one really needs
Now it's filled with hundreds and hundreds of chemicals
That mostly surround you
You wish to flee, but it's not like you
So listen to me, listen to me

Oh, oh, and when the morning comes
We will step outside
We will not find another man in sight
We like the newness, the newness of all
That has grown in our garden soaking for so long

Whenever I was a child
I wondered what if my name had changed
Into something more productive like Roscoe
Been born in 1891
Waiting with my Aunt Rosaline

Thought we were due
For a change or two
Around this place

When they get back, they're all mixed up with no one to stay with

Oh

1891
They roamed around and foraged
They made their house from cedars
They made their house from stone

Oh, they're a little like you
And they're a little like me
We have all we need

Thought we were due
For a change or two
Around this place
This place, this place

When they get back, they're all mixed up with no one to stay with
When they get back, they're all mixed up with no one to stay with

Overall Meaning

The song Roscoe by Ellie Goulding is a tale of two people who make a home for themselves in a world that is rapidly changing around them. The first verse speaks about the stonecutters who created the building blocks of the couple's home. They chose special stones for the couple who would live inside. The second verse speaks about the mountaineers who traveled to the couple's location, carrying everything they need to build a fire, and who ultimately helped to construct the couple's new home. The roof leaks at first, but the couple is grateful when the rain comes.

The chorus explores the concept of change. The couple feels like they are due for a change or two, but when they return from being away, they find that things have changed too much, and they have nobody to stay with. The bridge of the song explores the themes of identity and the passage of time. Ellie Goulding sings about how, as a child, she once wondered what it would be like to have a different name, like Roscoe, born in 1891. She imagines herself waiting with her aunt Rosaline, experiencing a time long before her own.

My favorite artist with no wonder. She can actually, really, truly sing without the aid of any effects and she doesn't even need a mic either. She is loaded with God-given talent. She has a great taste in music, old and new. She loves and covers great classics, and is a great pop singer as well. She can sing to any genre, be it rock, dubstep, rap, pop, folk, country - you name it. Her voice is angelic and beautiful and has a great range. She has a nice low voice, a stunning mid voice, and a gorgeous spine-tingling high voice. Her name is perfect - there's no name cuter, no name prettier than Ellie. Her name means "light," ""bright one," or "God is my light," which is beautifully suitable. Goulding is also a very beautiful name, which reminds you of gold. She is, indeed, "bright gold." Her middle name, Jane, is also pretty, and a variation of mine, John. No one can have a more beautiful name. She has a ridiculously large shelf of talent. Not only can she truly sing, but she can play any stringed instrument, such as guitar, uke, and harp, and the drums, too. She can beatbox and dance vivaciously, and is a great actress. She is a songwriter. She is naturally beautiful, with or without makeup. She is athletic and a good example of healthy living to all of us. She runs, surfs, boxes, does Tae Kwon Do, works out, and all sorts of things along the lines of physical fitness. She is truly a wonderful masterpiece that God has created for us to all love and enjoy. I am madly head-over-heels in love with her and my life would be sad and dull without her there to cheer me up, inspire me, and push me to be a better person and keep moving forward. She has the magic power to make anyone fall in love with her, and I continue to fall deeper and deeper in love with her with every day. She is still productive, posting pictures on Instagram and active in music-related things. I am so excited for her fourth studio album, which is soon going to be released. Because of her, I am now a runner, I eat better, and I feel better than I ever have. Because of her, I am an avid music producer in the works, a songwriter, and a pianist. The world would be a gloomy place without her, and as terrible as the world is these days, a day listening to and watching her gives you hope and builds you up. She cares about and takes care of God's wonderful Earth by being active in litter and pollution awareness organizations. Keep our home clean! Littering is dumb and unnecessary. She is also supporting organizations to reduce homelessness and disabilities. She is the girl everyone wants. She doesn't smoke, drinks more responsibility, and doesn't take drugs. She has no peircings (she had a lip peircing long ago, but had it removed), and her body isn't completely caked in noticable tattoos. Her tats are small, beautiful, and spread apart. She is a natural drug herself, as I get high on her smile and addicted to living better. Her songs are powerful and meaningful to everyone. Comforting and hopeful. She isn't obsessed and caught up in all of the sexuality of today and nearly none of her amazing songs are about sex. They are always true songs with good meanings and real messages. Sometimes beautiful love songs, but mostly other things. Her songs mean the world to me; she's the world to me. And her songs have a wonderful impact on everyone and help everyone in different situations. They are real songs. Although quite immodest at times on magazine covers and such, out of the light she is a real person who decides to dress modestly frequently. She has a flawless taste in fashion and most of the time, a simple tee and jeans do the trick. She is modest many more times than the former situation, and I, as well as millions of others, love her style. She looks stunning in anything - put her in overalls; a dress; all denim; all leather; jeans; shorts; long-sleeve; tanktop; stripes; plaide; flannel; a (backwards) cap; a cowboy hat; a headband; a crown - she's absolutely adorable in anything. Her voice - not her singing voice, but just her regular talking voice - is pure music. She has a great personality, is sweet, funny, and adorable. Without a doubt, at least in my eyes, she is the cutest, most beautiful human being God has ever created. She loves food (but, seriously, who doesn't?) and the outdoors, and loves to hike. Not trying to be mean, but she is exactly like me 😊 Including her favorite color, blue 🎡 Blue is life 🎡 Music is life. She is my love, my life. She is both lively and lovely. She is literally an angel on Earth. Ellie is my Elysium, my dream, my paradise, my happy place. She is everyone's dream. She means the universe to me, and millions of others.
She is Ellie
