05 Strung Out Again
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You get what you see
I saw a rich fuck giving charity
Saw an evil emperor
Wearing my clothes

They're far from the best
But they might suit you better than the rest
Just looking in the mirror
Will make you a brave man

I know my place
Hate my face
I know how I begin
And how I'll end
Strung out again

Was a parliament of owls
Fly over a city of canals
Floating on the body
Floating in the Dalles

You get what you see
But some things they just change invisibly
I don't know where I'm going
And I don't even want to know

They're far from the best
But they might suit you better than the rest
Just looking in the mirror
Will make you a brave man

Standing, smiling
On some fantasy island
Looking at my lost reflection again
But a tide's coming in

And I'm strung out again
Strung out again

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Elliott Smith’s song “Strung Out Again” entail the struggles of dealing with self-image and acceptance. The opening line of the chorus, “You get what you see,” conveys an essence of vulnerability where the persona understands that the only image being portrayed is what is visible to the public, and the image is not always the true self. The following lines describe two contrasts of individuals, a wealthy philanthropist and an oppressive ruler who wear masks, which can be interpreted as the persona's experiences of contrasting himself with two different identities. Elliott Smith presents the idea that people are merely perceived for how they appear on the outside, but are not truly known for who they are.

Nevertheless, the following line, “just looking in the mirror will make you a brave man,” suggests that self-reflection is significant to the persona’s understanding of their identity. However, the idea of having to face oneself through the mirror is seen as a daunting task, further emphasized by the line, “Hate my face.” The mention of parliament of owls soaring over a city of canals is a subtle approach that adds to the dark theme of the song. It can be interpreted as a metaphor of a lost and wandering soul without a permanent home, searching for refuge. Ultimately, the song ends with the persona recognizing the cycle of addiction in his life, despite his efforts to break free from it.

Hi - I've tried my best to write out what I think they are. It seems he's improvising a bit and he slurs a little but this is what makes sense to me. See below:

You get what you see
You said but you saw me completely
I thought you were looking through me
But now I'll never know

I don't look my best
But I might suit you better than the rest
If everything would surface
I'd be a brave man

I'd stand still
Learning
Light up
Learning
But now I'm just trying to sell my candles in
Strumped out again

There's a parliament of owls
Flying over a city of canals
And people taking pictures
Of our stars shooting down

You get what you see
Some things they just change invisibly
I don't know where I'm going
I don't even want to know

Stand still
Burning
Light up
Learning

Waiting for this evil spell to end
Strumped out again

Sailing
Oceans
Sick from
Notion
Thinking of the times you reeled me in
Strung out again
Strung out again
Strung out again

@bacardi119

Damn, he completely changed the lyrics here. I shouldn't be surprised, since he did that all the time. This version is awesome as well. RIP.

@paddling_out

damn i really wanted to hear the lead guitarwork live.. he skipped it on this one

@thechazdarby

definitely! Losing him was such a huge loss for all of us. I think about him a lot and hiswork that we get to enjoy. Every time I pick up my guitar I feel like he's with me somehow as wierd as that may sound.

Can someone please help me. Can anyone write the lyrics out and put them here. I have learning disability that makes it very difficult to do that. I wanted to create an art piece showing how this song has variations over time and what that looks like with mental health struggles. It is just for me and my understanding of my issues and how that also involves chemical release that isn't always the best choice. In no way am I claiming elliot smith had sake struggles. It is none of my business and would never assume anything. This is just something personal for me. I thank you all.
