11-Everything Means Nothing To Me
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Someone found the future as a statue
In a fountain
At attention looking backward in a
Pool of water

Wishes with a blue
Songbird on his shoulder
Who keeps singing over everything

Everything means nothing to me
Everything means nothing to me
Everything means nothing to me

I picked up the song and found my picture
In the paper
The reflection in the water shouted
"Are your men still

Trying to salute
People from a time when he was
Everything he's supposed to be?"

Everything means nothing to me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Elliott Smith’s “Everything Means Nothing To Me” have a haunting quality to them, as if the singer is trying to come to terms with the fleeting nature of life and the sense of isolation that often accompanies it. The opening lines describe a statue of the future, frozen in time and looking backward, almost as if it’s hesitant to move forward. The image of the statue in the fountain is an interesting juxtaposition of ideas, as water symbolizes life, movement, and change, while statues represent stasis, permanence, and timelessness. The wish that the singer talks about is represented by a blue songbird on someone’s shoulder, who sings over everything.

The main theme of the song is introduced in the chorus, which repeats the line “Everything means nothing to me” three times. This suggests a sense of disillusionment, a feeling that nothing in life really matters, and that we’re all just going through the motions. When the singer talks about his picture in the paper and the reflection in the water shouting at him, he’s really talking about his own inner voice, the one that’s constantly asking him if he’s living up to the expectations that he and others have set for him. The reference to men trying to salute people from a time when he was everything he’s supposed to be is a poignant commentary on the pressure we put on ourselves to live up to the standards set by others, even if those standards no longer apply.

Elliott Smith was one of those people that should have never died.

So sad I've just discover his greatness in 2010.

Pink Panther

@reearean he was nominated for an Oscar

@gregotheus_ It's never too late.
Serge Gainsbourg crossed my path in 2012. And three years ago, I discoverd 'L'Histoire De Melody Nelson'... a life changing album that turned 50 this year. He died in 1991.

This year, it occurred the same with Talk Talk and Girls (a band from San Francisco). Mark Hollis from Talk Talk passed away two years ago, and Chet JR White from Girls left this world last year. I regret no paying much attention to Girls at their peak as well as having ignored Talk Talk greatness for years. But the best way to pay tribute to all those gone people is playing their music, digging it and nailing it as it just had come out yesterday. Ironically, the more that stuff blows your mind the more you mourn their passing.

Elliott Smith and Jeff Buckley are sorely missed songwriters.

I love John Frusciante, especially his solo work. He was my big inspiration. I just found out about Elliott and I started crying listening to Between the Bars. I bought Either/or (I hate pirating songs, I wouldn't like it done to my music, even if I was dead), and I just stood there in absolute shock. I've NEVER heard such EMOTION and POWER sung and stung through a song. Alameda was a perfect example. Just the whole start of that album was amazing. I can't even pick up the guitar the same without trying to achieve that structured smooth playing. His chord changes are unreal. I though John was the master, I'm sorry, but Elliott is the acoustic and chord king. I'd even go as far to say he's better than George and Lennon. Yeah.

Steal Elliott's music. His pos parents don't deserve your money.

It still destroys me how Elliott died. So brutal. And such a beautiful soul. I was lucky enough to see him live once and I love his music and miss him terribly.
