2-45 Am
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm going out sleepwalking
Where mute memories start talking
The boss that couldn't help but hurt you
And the pretty thing he made desert you

I'm going out now like a baby
A name unsatisfiable baby
Grabbing onto whatever's around
For the soaring high or the crushing down

With hidden cracks that don't show
But that constantly just grow
I'm looking for the man that attacked me
While everybody was laughing at me

You beat it in me that part of you
But I'm gonna split us back in two
Tired of living in a cloud
If you're gonna say shit now you'll do it out loud

It's 2:45 in the morning
And I'm putting myself on warning
For waking up in an unknown place
With a recollection you've half erased

Looking for somebody's arms to
Wave away past harms
I'm walking out on center circle
The both of you can just fade to black

I'm walking out on center circle
Been pushed away and I'll never go back

Overall Meaning

In "2:45 AM," Elliott Smith delves into the emotions of a person who is sleepwalking through memories, as they become overwhelmed with the past. The lyrics focus on the frustration and pain that come with trying to escape from a traumatic experience. The first verse of the song establishes the idea of memories speaking through the mute. The singer of the song is attempting to get away from negative memories of their boss, and the person that they once loved.

In the second verse, the lyrics delve into the idea of being unsatisfied and trying to overcome those feelings. The singer is holding on to whatever is around, whether that means the highs or crushing lows. They are searching for someone to blame for the pain and hurt with hidden cracks that constantly grow. The singer feels attacked by somebody who ridiculed and hurt them, while everyone else stood by and laughed. However, in the end, the singer splits themselves back in two to escape and move on from the hurtful memories.

Overall, "2:45 AM" portrays a relatable story of trying to escape memories of abuse and suffocating feelings of hurt that have affected the singer’s life. It's a powerful song about confronting trauma, expressing anger, and breaking free.

I'm going out sleepwalking

Where mute memories start talking

The boss that couldn't help but hurt you

And the pretty thing he made desert you

I'm going out like a baby

A naive unsatisfiable baby

Grabbing onto whatever's around

For the soaring high or the crushing down

Hidden cracks that don't show

But that constantly just grow

Looking for the man that attacked me

While everybody was laughing at me

You beat it in me, that part of you

But I'm gonna split us back in two

Tired of living in a cloud

If you're gonna say shit now you'll do it out loud

It's 2:45 in the morning

And I'm putting myself on warning

For waking up in an unknown place

With a recollection you've half-erased

Looking for somebody's arms

To wave away past harm

Walking out on Center Circle

Both of you can just fade to black

Walking out on Center Circle

Been pushed away and I'll never come back

I hear these slight adjustments which all affect the meanings of the lines:

You're going out sleepwalking
And the pretty thing you made desert you
With hidden cracks that don't show
I'm looking for the man that attacked me
If you're gonna say shit now you do it out loud
With a recollection you half erased *
To wave away past harms
The both of you can just fade to black

* only one I'm not sure about, the others are plain as day.

Kill Rock Stars thanks so much I love some rare Elliott footage 🦷

@Alexdrod

The fact that the drums come in with less than a minute left in the song is one of my favorite musical moments. It is just something that adds so much personality to the song.  I can't really describe why it is so great but that's sort of how Elliott is all the time.

Your not alone. It does close the song good I think.

***** Well said.

Alex Rodgers I've always felt the same thing. Totally unexpected but adds something indescribable to the song..

same here

Bringing percussion in in those last few moments of the song amplify the desperation bleeding through the lyrics. Simply perfect orchestration. Elliott Smith was a genius.

I stayed up just so I could listen to this at 2:45 am

@knuckle12356

That's cute. I'm up every night until 8 am, or so. This song is fir everyone, but it's about ppl like me. The miserable, the alone, the addicted. Left with no one and nothing at 2:45A.M. except the music of a dead man I relate to more than anyone still living. I would say still around, but they arent. Not for us. No one is. You have a great night. I'll be up.
