A Passing Feeling
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everything is gone but the echo of the burst of a shell
And I'm stuck waiting for a passing feeling
In the city I built up and blew to hell
I'm stuck here waiting for a passing feeling

Still I send all the time
My request for relief
Down the dead power lines
Though I'm beyond belief

In the help I require
Just to exist at all
Took a long time to stand
Just an hour to fall.

I'm stuck here waiting for a passing feeling
Stuck here waiting for the passing feeling
Still I send all the time
My request for relief

Down the dead power lines
Though I'm beyond belief
In the help I require
Just to exist at all

Took a long time to stand
Just an hour to fall

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "A Passing Feeling" by Elliott Smith tell a story of desperation and hopelessness. The underlying theme of the song seems to be a sense of feeling stuck in a place or situation that is beyond one's control. The first verse talks about devastation caused by a blast, possibly like a grenade or a bomb, in a city that the singer had created from scratch only to see it reduced to rubble. The singer then laments his situation, waiting for a fleeting moment of relief in a space where nothing seems to move. The repetitive usage of words "I'm stuck waiting for a passing feeling" highlights the singer's pain, and his desire to let go of this feeling of being incessantly stuck.

The second verse of the song talks about the singer's unrelenting plea for help despite having lost faith in its ability to change his circumstance. "Down the dead power lines" symbolizes the singer's desperation, trying to reach out to something that is no longer functional. The singer recognizes the irony of the situation when they say, "though I am beyond belief in the help I require, just to exist at all." This line further emphasizes the singer's hopelessness because even with the help that is coming; it is failing to overcome the darkness that surrounds them. The last two lines, "Took a long time to stand, Just an hour to fall," reaffirms that the singer's struggle has been long, and it only took an hour to fall apart, losing everything they had.

With every Elliott song I feel they grow on you the more you listen to them. Thought this track was okay at first. Now I’ve convinced it has to be one of the best songs ever created. Absolute masterpiece of a track, created by to my mind the single greatest musician who ever existed. When the world gave him nothing, Elliott gave us everything. I wish I could thank him in person.
