All Cleaned Out
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here come your pride and joy
The comic little drunk you call your boy
Making everybody smile
Who takes your pretty plan
And then becomes a disappearing man
After a little while

I saw you with your makeup running down
Now what's that all about?
You say you don't want anyone around
'Cause you're all cleaned out

You toss the empty beer
Not really as composed as you appear
A icicle inside
Wearing clothes that clash
Wondering is this treasure, is this trash
Still trying to decide
And about five o'clock here comes your clown
With the front he's throwing down

But all you say is you don't want anyone around
No, not right now
There ain't nothing to drink
You don't wanna think about it

I'm sorry you seem so stung
And I'm sorry you think you have to hold your tongue
When you're so pretty and smart
I'm seeing you caving in
Becoming afraid of all these men
That you've given your heart

I saw you with your makeup running down
Now what's that all about?
You say you don't want anyone around
'Cause you're all cleaned out

All cleaned out
All cleaned out

Overall Meaning

In this song, Elliott Smith is describing a person's downfall after taking up the habit of alcoholism. The first verse talks about a boy who is always drunk and only makes people happy. The phrase "comic little drunk" refers to the drunk being funny and creates smiles for people around. The boy takes the pretty plan and after a while disappears. The second verse then switches to the person who is drinking with empty beer bottles scattered around. The makeup is running down, perhaps referencing the tears streamed down from alcohol, and the person is not speaking to anyone because they are all cleaned out. They feel like they have got nothing left and there is no point in being with people. The person is only okay when they are drunk, but when sober, they do not like themselves and do not want to face anyone.

In the third verse, the person is wearing clothes that do not match, unsure of what treasures they have and what they should get rid of. This reflects the character's confusion by the number of choices present in life. The person does not like to think about the situation they may be in and continues drinking to stay in a happy place. The fourth verse is Smith sympathizing with the person and wishing to help but somehow can't seem to communicate correctly. He sees them falling apart and becoming afraid of other men, perhaps the person's drinking buddies, or even themselves. The song eventually ends with Smith saying, "all cleaned out," the person's desperate state of mind.

Another example of Smith’s ability to utilize established forms in creative ways. Very brief guitar intro and he’s right into the verse which has more complexity than virtually all pop songs today in the verse alone. The verse has two or three parts to it, depending on how you look at it and a brief but effective chorus... Repeats verse and then has a brief but effective bridge for contrast and then a few bars of guitar to propel him back into the final verse and the slightly drawn out chorus to end it cleanly and effectively.
He does something similar with Easy Way Out some years later.
That’s only the music though often his music and lyrics also relate very well together.
It’s a common and inaccurate trope that Elliott was self involved as a writer as he often directs his lyrics to a second person as in this case All Cleaned Out, Easy Way Out, Miss Misery, Between The Bars and many others. He was a social “poet” or lyricist as well as someone who could communicate an inner state... which he also does in this song as he addresses another “actor”...

“I saw you with your make-up running down
Now what's that all about
You say you don't want anyone around
Cause you're all cleaned out”

I find those lines to be very touching and we don’t need to know the exact circumstances to form strong mental images to connect us to the “story” or “narrative” that develops here...

I can never pick a favorite Elliott Smith song and stick with it. It changes as I change. Different moods and moments make me really moved by one song today, then another one tomorrow. Elliott's music is great like that. This song is my favorite song today. I can relate to it in so many ways. I don't want to write a novel, so I will keep it brief. I suffer from alcoholism, though I've been sober for over 4 years now. It was a source of pride for the first few years. Now I'm just frustrated all the time. I suffer from panic disorder, agoraphobia, dermatillomania, and major depressive disorder. Being sober has sucked me dry. I would say I'm what is known as a highly sensitive person, or to most people just fucking crazy. I find it hard, almost impossible to not be ruled by emotion. It's been a good thing when it comes to me being a photographer. I think people like me (crazy) tend to be really creative. That is when they aren't going through a period like I am right now, too depressed to do anything these days. I isolate myself, spending 99% of my time in my room. I have good days where I'm able to be "normal" to some extent. But I feel like those days are becoming fewer and farther in between.

How u doing now dawg

I relate to this so well I could have written it myself, minus the Photographer career, which sounds really awesome, btw. I consider myself a creative and overly sensitive person. At over 13 years sober now from drugs and alcohol, no therapy or antidepressant has ever helped for long. So many things easily become an addiction and I would give anything to be a normal person who can live in some form of a world of moderation but I don't think it's possible for me. Good days and bad days but more bad days - the state of our world and country isn't helping. Evil has been unleashed upon us, in case some haven't noticed.

Just always know guys. That there always will be another Elliott Smith fan thinking about all of you. We just are like that. And for the favorite song change. It's been it like the beginning for me. And at the time I was still on drugs and kinda cool about being depressed.
And I saw a lot of comments like it, I just don't know it's funny, I guess it's another thing we mostly all have in common

don't worry as you saw it comes and goes and there are reasons to that, you can do things with that, just don't be too afraid. Of nothing I mean please. I hope I will serve to somebody. I know what you feel just different drug.

It's important to remember these songs: to remember that this is a double album of outtakes that didn't even make it onto the two albums pressed during their composition. It's important because so many of them are understated masterpieces, like Smith's work as a whole.

If you have in yourself a creative spark, whatever your medium, remember this: It's not important to remember these songs so as to become discouraged; but rather, it's important to remember these things songs to take them in as fuel with which the singular spark in you and only you might shine, for its time, in this place. For any who needs to see or hear or know what you have to say.
