Alphabet Town
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Alphabet city is haunted
Constantina feels right at home
She probably won't say you're wrong
But you're already wrong

You're already wrong
And you threw up whatever she shot down
Said show me around this alphabet town
Said show me around

There's a name you keep repeating
You got nothing better to do
And you're with someone who'll hear you say it and just not mind
Her hand on your arm

Her hand on your arm
She put her hand on your arm
And told you her name you can't pronounce it
I'll show you around this alphabet town

I'll show you around this alphabet town
I know what you are
I just don't mind
I won't say you're wrong

I know what you want
And it's what I want
So let's go out
I'm ready to go out

I'll show you around this alphabet town
I'll show you around this alphabet town

Overall Meaning

The song "Alphabet Town" by Elliott Smith explores themes of loneliness, nostalgia, and longing for connection. Alphabet City, located in the East Village of New York City, is known for its diverse and eclectic mix of music, art, and culture. The first verse sets up the image of Alphabet City as a haunting place, but one where Constantina, presumably someone the singer is close to, feels at home. The chorus repeats the request to be shown around this alphabet town, emphasizing the desire to understand and connect with this place and the people within it.

The second verse introduces a name that is repeatedly mentioned, highlighting the need for connection and communication. The singer is with someone who will listen to them and doesn't mind hearing the repetition. The hand on the arm represents a physical connection that brings comfort and companionship. The last two lines of the verse switch back to the presence of the city, "I'll show you around this alphabet town," emphasizing the feeling of being lost and needing guidance to understand this place.

The final verse conveys a mutual understanding between the two people, as they both know what the other wants and are ready to go out and explore the city together. The repeated phrase "I won't say you're wrong" reinforces the idea of acceptance and understanding of each other's desires and needs. The song ends on the repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the desire to be shown around and understand this alphabet town.

Just getting into this guy for the first time at 23 years old. I gotta say, I’m really enjoying his work so far. Shame he died so young and never seemed to escape his demons.

@devon_darko

This song sounds exactly like any given small town in Texas...relentless heat, no noise other than the bugs, and people indoors on drug benders left and right. This one manages to somehow document that exact flavor for me, and that's how you know he's a genius writer - and here, it's done with just a guitar, vocals, and a harmonica.

@TheHarrisontemple

yup that was my experience in south texas lmao

@RayoAtra

Pretty sure he meant L.A. but i feel ya.

@devon_darko

@@RayoAtra He spent much of his life in the south as well, but I'm just speaking from a personal place

@nicholasfair6882

I agree. Maybe not written specifically about South Texas, but a perfect fit.
