Clouds
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Molecules disipate, disperse and recoagulate
Breath in and out, there is nothing more

I am mist, you are steam, we are clouds
We are drifting away, drifting away
To one of many heavens where blue light prevails
We dream perfect music, we hang from our tails
To one of many hells and sharpen up our horns
Plotting our revenge by waiting to be born

Particles of light, particles of matter
Come together for an instant

Then scatter.

Overall Meaning

The first two lines of Elliott Smith's song "Clouds" express the fleeting and transient nature of life by comparing human existence to the dispersion of molecules. Every moment we exist, we are expending energy and dispersing ourselves throughout the world, only to come back together in a different form later on. This theme of impermanence and change is prominent throughout the song and is reflective of Smith's broader lyrical style. The line "breath in and out, there is nothing more" emphasizes the simplicity of existence, and how the act of simply being alive is enough to find meaning and purpose in life.

The chorus of the song further explores the theme of impermanence by comparing human beings to clouds. Like clouds, we are drifting, formless, and always changing. The song describes how we are all headed towards some kind of afterlife, represented by one of many heavens and hells. In this sense, life is presented as a journey with an ultimate destination rather than a fixed state of being. There is also a sense of duality in the chorus, with the imagery of light and darkness (blue light vs. sharpened horns) representing the potential for both good and evil in the world.

Overall, "Clouds" is a song about coming to terms with the fleeting nature of life and finding meaning within that impermanence. By comparing humanity to elemental forces like molecules and clouds, Smith presents existence as something larger and more universal than just a single human life. The song also explores themes of duality and the potential for both good and evil within us.

@Drew Glenn Try elliottsmithbootlegs.com or Archive.org . You might be able to find it again there.

Jesse Clift

Does anyone know where I can find this disc..? I need it!

Kirk

@Jesse Clift It was included in a book of photography, called Elliott Smith, by Autumn de Wilde. Failing that, try the URLs I posted above. It's only 5 or 6 tracks...but they're really good.

Thank you so much for uploading, I love this cover but the oooold MP3 I had for so long was so terrible quality compared to this and even a 'remastered' version someone else did on here.

Joanna Bolme plays bass for Quasi, which is who you're referring to. You might know her from Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks or The Minders. She also happens to have been Eliott Smith's girlfriend at one point and did mixing for his albums Either/Or and From A Basement on the Hill. She's been doing stuff with Quasi since the 90s as I recall, but wasn't "officially" a member until like the last few years or something.
