Color Bars
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see color bars when I come
Sergeant Rock broke the key off in the lock to where I come from
Sir, no sir, we have no power in the air
The battle's on the ground

Laying low again, high on the sound
Bruno S. is a man to me
You're just some dude with a stilted attitude
That you learned from TV
You'll undo, but I'll be connecting everything
The traffic in my town
Riding high again, high on the sound

Everyone wants me to ride into the sun

But I ain't gonna go down
Laying low again, high on the sound

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Elliott Smith's song "Color Bars" depict a disillusioned person who sees the world in terms of color bars, a visual test pattern that is displayed when there is no signal on a television. The imagery is fitting for the feeling of emptiness and void that permeates the singer's life. The song goes on to reference Sergeant Rock, a character from the DC Comics universe who goes on secret missions, but in this case, he has failed to open the lock to where the singer comes from. This failure suggests that those in power are not able to provide a solution to the singer's struggles.

The singer sings "Sir, no sir, we have no power in the air," suggesting a sense of powerlessness and abandonment. The battle is on the ground, where the singer must navigate the harsh realities of life. He finds solace by "laying low again, high on the sound," a reference to using music as an escape from the world. The singer also references Bruno S., someone who is important to him while dismissing someone else as "just some dude with a stilted attitude that you learned from TV." The contrasting treatment of the two characters highlights the importance of genuine connections in a world that often favors superficiality.

yep.....that is the shit. love my brother Elliott.

@c.eb.1216

Some of his songs like this one are so full of joy that I don't understand when people say his music was depressing. As depressed as he may have been, you can tell that he was fighting against the darkness and really did appreciate life. He was a beautiful honest person.

@petet6851

He was also funny ...goofy and good sense of humor.

@kevinthomas4180

His death was really senseless but he did take a lot of drugs those highs have ups and downs, much like his music. For example, I sometimes feel like I want to stick around and am sure of it, but then I'll feel like maybe not. ebbs and flows.

@punkskunk7172

@Kevin Thomas it's just him being in the wrong place at the wrong time :c

@knuckle12356

The way people described him writing/recording so frenetically I always got the impression that recording the music was a catharsis for him. Like clearing your system out of all this dark shit. Only way out is through, ya know?

@BadBoyBehr

1:39 always gets chills. That little relief between the vocals. Fucking next level composition.

@iesus68
