Don't Go Down
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I met a girl
Snowball in hell
She's as hard
And as cracked as a liberty bell
And I got her to
Come on and move in with me
And I said I'll find a better place
Where we can spend eternity
Don't go down
Don't go down
Stay with me, baby stay
Her mother called me a thief
And her dad
Was a total commander and chief
I fall in love with my love
But I knew the kind of worthlessness we have to raise above
Don't go down
Don't go down
Stay with me, baby stay
Don't go down
Don't go down
Stay with me, baby stay
She had a dream
Woke up in shock
She had seen
Her own body outlined in chalk
No fingerprints were found on the gun
And her ghost leaned down to kiss me
With a message from the sun
Don't go down
Don't go down
Stay with me, baby stay
Don't go down
Stay with me, baby stay

Don't go down
Stay with me, baby stay

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Elliott Smith's song Don't Go Down tell the story of a man's relationship with a troubled and damaged woman. He meets her and takes her in, promising to find a new and better place for them to live. However, her parents do not approve of their relationship, with her mother calling him a thief and her father being a strict authoritarian figure. Despite these obstacles, he falls in love with her and encourages her to rise above her problems. The song takes a dark turn when the woman has a dream where she sees herself dead, and her ghost visits the man with a message from the sun.

The lyrics are open to interpretation, but it seems likely that the song is about the difficulties of a tumultuous relationship. The woman's problems could be interpreted as mental illness, drug addiction or some other kind of affliction. The line "snowball in hell" is a colloquial expression meaning something is very unlikely, so it's possible the man initially thought their relationship was doomed to fail. The "better place" he promises her could refer to a physical location or a change in their lives for the better.

The line "total commander and chief" is a deviation of the phrase "commander-in-chief," meaning the ultimate head of a military. This could suggest that the woman's father is an authoritarian figure who is difficult to please. The dream sequence at the end of the song is haunting, with the woman's ghost visiting the man with a warning. It's unclear what the message from the sun is, but it could be a metaphorical representation of the harsh reality of life.

I met a girl, a snowball in hell
She was hard and as cracked as the Liberty Bell
I got her to come on and move in with me
And I said I'd find a better place we could spend eternity

Don't go down
Don't go down
Stay with me
Baby, stay

Her mama called me a thief
And her dad called himself commander-in-chief
I fought him off with my love
But I knew the sense of worthlessness she'd have to rise above

Don't go down
Don't go down
Stay with me
Baby, stay

She had a dream, woke up in shock
She had seen her own body outlined in chalk
I split the scene, the globe 'd been spun
And her ghost beamed down to kiss me with a message from the sun

Don't go down
Stay with me
Baby, stay

This song is sonically crushing. The guitars on this record are ridiculous. The mix is the work of a madman.

People don't talk enough about how genius the guitar is in this album. The sense of turmoil that eases into security and then back again is all driven by those "out of tune" guitars, as critics put it. Also, the acoustic guitar in Memory Lane and The Last Hour are killer.

The guitar solo from 'Real estate' is a neat one as well . And 'Almost Over' shines out
