Everything's OK
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everything's okay
Walks along the dock
With some sailor's pay
Shoved down in his sock
Everything's okay
With some little boy in blue
Who don't know you like I do
Everything's okay
Took him back to town
Well, I didn't get paid today
So I'm in the lost and found
And I wonder if that clown
Knows just what to do
What to say and what not to

The pretty words that you whispered
Maybe I misunderstood
Somebody's not paying attention
What they promised and their word isn't good

Everything's okay
I'm looking for you now
Down here by the bay
Where the water pounds
Up against the wall
That I'm coming to
Because I can't stay away from you

I don't need no satisfaction
And I don't take just because I can
Sometimes I get a strong impression
That you just don't understand
That kind of man

Everything's okay
I can see your face
Don't there in the waves
Painted and erased
But I'm told it's just
The reflection of the moon
A big fake resembling you

I'm going to go down in the water
And fill my mouth up full of sand
And I'll be waiting still impatient
With my dead imagination
While you're with some other man

Everything's okay
I'll be with you soon
I'm walking out to place
My arms around the moon
Yeah, I'll be with you soon
Just as I'm paid
I'll walk across the water
Everything's okay

Walk on the water
Everything's okay

Overall Meaning

In "Everything's OK" by Elliott Smith, the singer appears to be in a state of confusion and longing. He describes a man walking along the dock with some sailor's pay in his sock, insinuating he may be a sailor or a blue-collar worker. The singer seems to be comparing himself to this man and reflecting on his own struggles to make ends meet. He mentions a little boy in blue who doesn't know him like someone else does, potentially indicating the singer's loneliness and lack of connection to those around him.

The song then shifts to the singer waiting by the bay and looking for someone, presumably a lover or former lover. He reflects on their past interactions and the promises they made to each other. He is looking for the person, but also seemingly frustrated with them as he mentions feeling like they're not paying attention to what they promised to do. The singer then shifts back to his own struggles, stating that he doesn't need satisfaction and doesn't take things just because he can. He ends the song by saying he will walk on water and be with the person soon, indicating his desperation and need to be with them.

Overall, "Everything's OK" is a song about longing and desperation. It touches on themes of financial instability, loneliness, and unfulfillment in relationships.

Everything's okay,
I'm looking for you now
Down here by the bay,
Where the water pounds
Up against the wall,
That I'm coming to
Because I can't stay away from you,

I don't need no satisfaction
And I don't take just because I can,
Sometimes I get a strong impression
That you just don't understand,
That kind of man...

Such a potent song, this is one of his best though he has so many great songs - he never wrote a bad one & I've delved deeply into just about everything he touched.

This song has become a sacred hymn for me. I sing it like spirituals when I walk, I recite it like litany. I don't even feel the pain that I can't ever know Elliott anymore, just knowing someone like him existed to say these things for someone else, just that reminder, it might be the closest thing I feel to faith.

I know exactly what you mean. I'm glad to read your comment and see that I'm not alone in how I feel
